19th Century British European Officer’s Sword

19th-century-decorative-sword-2

An interesting and unusual early 19th Century British European Officer’s Sword.  It has quite an elaborate hilt design although I have noted the same decorative features on knucklebows of English infantry officers’ swords of the Napoleonic period.  The blade is single-fullered and plain with no markings that I can see – this is not unusual for swords of this period as many were not actually made in Britain but produced in large quantities in Germany and exported in Britain where they were hilted.  Many of these swords are unmarked.

English hanger blades of the late-18th Century

The blade is reminiscent of English hanger blades of the late-18th Century, especially with regard to the deep, single fuller and slightly curved blade that is double-edged towards the point.  Cannot see any markings which is not unusual in swords of this period.  No scabbard.  There are few age cracks to the hilt – see pics.  Blade length is 28.5 inches (34.5 inches overall).
