A rare and scarce English C.1780 Naval Officer’s Sword Hanger. This is a seldom encountered English late-18th Century naval officer’s sword with distinctive gilt-brass, five-ball hilt. The pommel is of cushion form and the grip is made from ribbed ivory. This type of sword was carried towards the end of the Eighteenth Century and was of a type favoured by English naval officers up until the introduction of a standard pattern in 1805.
Brass fouled anchor to hilt cartouche
There is also a brass fouled anchor cartouche inset into the front of the cushioned pommel. The hilt has a chained knuckle guard. The blade is plain and slightly curved. No scabbard. In good overall condition with light age wear to the blade. Blade length is 32.5 inches (38 inches overall).
