A superb example of a Scottish 19th Century Gordon Highlanders Basket-hilted Broadsword to an officer in the 5th Volunteer Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders. The blade is extensively decorated with regimental designations and a royal “VR” cypher and scrolling foliage. It is also etched with the owner’s initials near the blade forte. The initials are intertwined in a complex manner typical of the period and once deciphered it would not be too difficult to find out who the officer was because the battalion would have been relatively small.
Basket hilt retains original liner
The basket-hilt is also in fine condition and retains its original felt and buckskin liner. Also comes complete with its original scabbard that fits perfectly. If you want to get just one good example of this iconic Scottish military sword, then this is the one. A very nice sword. Blade length is 32 inches (39 inches overall).
