English Dated 1690 Naval Cutlass Sword. Probably one of the earliest English naval cutlasses that you are likely to come across. This very fine piece is in excellent condition and comprises a brass, fluted shell guard and rounded pommel with prominent tang button. The grip is made from a dark hardwood and is all original. What makes this a fascinating and very rare sword is that the sword is dated to 1690 at the blade forte.
Impressive blade with deep maker’s mark
There is also the letters “WG” next to the date and to the reverse there is a deep maker’s stamp. The blade is impressive and of large proportions, with a typical cutlass-type swelling of the blade towards the point. Both blade and hilt are rock solid with no movement and have always been together. Blade length is 30 inches (35 inches overall).
