An excellent C.1900’s Kings Own Scottish Borderers Cross-hilted Broadsword. This sword would have been carried by an officer in the regiment and dates from the early years of the 20th Century and was carried during the reign of King Edward VII (1901-1910). The cross-hilt was introduced during the latter years of the 19th Century as a practical alternative to the rather cumbersome basket hilt that was traditionally carried by Scottish Highland infantry officers. It could be used both as a fighting sword and also a dress sword.
Condition of the sword is excellent
In later examples such as this one, the hilt was interchangeable with the basket hilt by the unscrewing of the pommel. Condition of the sword is excellent and the grip retains all of the original fishskin and twistwire. The blade is etched with numerous regimental motifs, royal cypher of King Edward VII and royal crown. The blade is also etched with numerous battle honours of this famous regiment.
