German Model 1867/71 Cavalry Officer’s Sword

german-model-1867-cavalry-sword-3

A good example of a German Model 1867/71 Cavalry Officer’s Sword.  This sword comprises a pierced steel multi-bar hilt with fishskin grip and remains of the original silver twistwire.  The best feature of this sword is the blade that is extensively decorated with a mixture of military motifs, including stands of arms, cannons, furled flags and scrolling foliage.  The blade is in excellent condition and the blade is very crisp and terminates with a clipped point.  The sword comes complete with its original steel scabbard.  I have seen this model of sword carried by both Prussian and Saxon cavalry officers and it is likely that it comes from one of these German nation states.  Blade length is 33 inches (39 inches overall).
