A very early example of a c.1700 Turkish Georgian Caucasian Yataghan Sword. This is a particular eastern sword type and comprises a simple black horn grip and typical yataghan-styled flared ears to the pommel. The blade is heavily reinforced. Decoration to the curved blade is complex and elaborate and includes inlaid brass roundels, flowers, jagged points, script and fantastical shapes. This sword has a very fine balance and would have been very effective as a slashing combat weapon, especially whilst on horseback. They were carried throughout Turkey and the Balkans and also in Russian Caucasia. The quality of the blade manufacture was highly prized in these cultures and much effort was always directed by the swordsmith in producing a blade that was both flexible and strong.
Early Yataghan swords rare in the market
These early examples are rarely seen in the market and this is a fine yataghan in excellent condition for its great age with commensurate wear to the blade. Blade length is 24 inches (29 inches overall).
