British 1804 Pattern Naval Cutlass
An original and fine example of a British 1804 Pattern Naval Cutlass. This is a scarce sword and rarely found with such clear markings. It comprises a typical figure-of-eight iron hilt and ribbed iron grip. The blade is unfullered and spear-pointed with a deep stamp of the royal cypher of King George III – GR – and crown above. This pattern of cutlass was carried by British naval seaman throughout the Napoleonic Wars and is the archetypal style associated with this period. Few examples have survived as they were normally endured a hard service life and were discarded when unfit for use.
Condition of the Cutlass
In good overall condition with appropriate age and service wear.
Specifications of the Cutlass
Blade length is 28.75 inches (34 inches overall).
