A good British 19th Century Naval Machete Sword Cutlass. This type of naval weapon was carried on board ships throughout the 19th century and comprises a hardwood grip held together with steel pins. The blade is curved, single-fullered and double-edged towards the end of the blade.
Cutlasses made in Solingen, Germany
Many of these cutlass types were also made in Solingen, Germany and sold throughout Europe. This could also be a German-made cutlass that was sold into the British market. The blade is unmarked. Similar types of commercial cutlasses are shown in the book on historic naval weapons, Boarders Away by Gilkerson. Blade length is 18.5 inches (24 inches overall).
