German 19th Century Export Cavalry Sword

german-19th-century-cavalry-sword-2

Interesting German 19th Century Export Cavalry Sword.  This sword manufactured by PDL (Paul D Luneschloss) of Solingen, Germany, who were a famous sword making company that produced large quantities of swords and edged weapons during the 19th Century and were a prominent supplier during the American Civil War, most notably to Federal forces.  This unusual piece was probably made for export as there are no official military or governmental markings to the sword and this was likely to be a generic style sold to many countries.  It comprises a brass, three-bar hilt and leather wrapped grip.  The blade is plain and quite curved.  The blade is marked PDL to the blade forte.  The blade has staining and age wear.  Both hilt and blade are solid and with no movement.  Blade length is 33.5 inches (40 inches overall).

Austrian WW1 Army Trench Knife and Scabbard

austrian-ww1-trench-knife-3

A good and complete example of an Austrian WW1 Army Trench Knife and Scabbard.  These substantial trench knives were produced for the ordinary Austro-Hungarian soldier and carried throughout WW1.  They have a distinctive design and comprises a long lightwood (birch?) grip, secured with steel pins.  The crossguard is of elliptical shape and there is a government inspection mark to the top of the crossguard.  The blade is plain and double-edged and has the letter “P” stamped at the blade forte.  The blade is very clean and with no pitting or problems.  The knife comes with its original darkened steel scabbard.  Both knife and scabbard fit tightly and well into the scabbard.  A good and scarce piece of WW1 Austro-Hungarian edged weaponry.   Blade length is 8.25 inches (13.25 inches overall).

Scottish Cameron Highlanders Named Basket Hilt Sword

 scottish-cameron-highlanders-baskethilt-sword-3

An excellent example of a pre-WW1 Scottish Cameron Highlanders Named Basket Hilt Sword.  This sword was owned by Duncan Gordon Davidson who was commisioned into the 2nd Battalion Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, joining the 2nd Battalion in India in 1910.  He served in France  during WW1 from 1915-16 and was severeley wounded at Dickebusch, Belgium, on the 23rd February 1915.  See images below for a picture of him with his fellow officers.  He survived the war and later succeeded his father as the 7th Laird, Davidson of Davidson.  The sword comprises a steel, nickel-plated basket hilt with a fishskin grip bound with silver twistwire.  Also retains its original tassels and liner.  The condition of the blade is virtually mint with all original nickel plating still remaining.  The blade is etched with Camerons’ regimental motifs, crown and thistle decoration.  Sword comes complete with a leather and nickel-plated mounted scabbard.

Scottish C.WW1 Lowland Artillery Officer’s Sword

scottish-lowland-artillery-sword-3

A scarce Scottish C.WW1 Lowland Artillery Officer’s Sword.  This sword follows the 1821 Pattern Artillery Officer’s Sword and comprises a steel, nickel-plated three-bar hilt with a fishskin grip wrapped in silver twistwire – some missing.  The blade was retailed by Hobson and Sons of London and is etched with the regimental name – 3rd Lowland Brigade RFA (Royal Field Artillery).  This regiment was prior to WW1 known as the Ayrshire and Galloway Royal Garrison Artillery (Volunteers).  The Royal Field Artillery was attached to a Division and provided medium calibre ordnance.  The sword is also etched with typical Royal Artillery motifs including lightning bolts, flaming grenade, scrolling foliage and also the owner’s initials which I have not deciphered to date.  At some stage the bade has been sharpened which has removed some etching to the edge of the blade.  Comes complete with leather scabbard.  Blade length is 34.5 inches (41 inches overall).

British 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Trooper’s Sword

british-1796-pattern-cavalry-troopers-sword-2

An excellent and original British 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Trooper’s Sword.  This iconic British military sword was carried throughout the Napoleonic Wars and used in such famous battles as Salamanca(1812) and Waterloo (1815).  It comprises a steel stirrup hilt with a leather bound grip – the leather is original to the grip.  The sword has a large and wide hatchet-type blade that is maker marked on the blade spine to Runkel of Solingen, German.  John Justus Runkel was a native German sword importer who made his home in England and arranged the importation of large numbers of swords and sword blades into England during the Napoleonic Wars.  This is one of those imported swords.  As with most of his swords, the quality of manufacture is very high and it would have been a very effective slashing and cutting sword whilst used on horseback.  The blade is in fine condition with a lovely smooth patina.  The blade is also stamped with a British Board of Ordnance crown and number, indicating that it had been approved by government inspectors.  Both blade and hilt are rock solid and with no movement.  A great addition to any collection of British Napoleonic swords.  Blade length is 32.75 inches (37 inches overall).

US Native Indian Trade Knife and Beaded Scabbard

indian-plains-trade-knife-3

A very good and original example of a Native Plains Indian Trade Knife and Scabbard.  These knives were normally manufactured in Sheffield, England and exported over to the USA in large quantities.  This c.1900’s knife has a plain, double-edged blade.  These knives were used primarily for skinning animals and were popular amongst native American peoples as they were cheap to purchase and easily replaced when worn out or broken.  I would guess that the leather scabbard has been made by Native Americans and added at a later date(?).  The scabbard has trailing beads to the top and bottom of the scabbard.  Both knife and scabbard are in good, sound condition with no issues.  Blade length is 8 inches (12 inches overall).  Please note that I do have another Native Indian trade knife for sale that came with this one – please see my other listings.

A very good example of a Native Plains Indian Trade Knife and Scabbard.  These knives were usually manufactured in Sheffield, England and exported over to the USA in large quantities.  This c.1900’s knife has an etched blade that reads:  THE SPECIAL BUTCHERS KNIFE to one side.  These knives were used primarily for skinning animals and were popular amongst native American peoples as they were cheap to purchase and easily replaced when worn out or broken.  I would guess that the scabbard has been made by Native Americans and added at a later date(?).  It consists of a rawhide skin decorated with applied beads to the top of the scabbard and a series of trailing beads secured to the side of the scabbard by brass pins.  Both knife and scabbard are in good, sound condition with no issues.  Blade length is 8 inches (12 inches overall).  Please note that I do have another Native Indian trade knife for sale that came with this one – please see my other listings.

English C.1770’s Naval Belt Dirk Dagger

18th-century-naval-belt-dagger-2

An excellent English C.1770’s Naval Belt Dirk Dagger.  This is a very good example of the type of dagger that would have been carried by naval officers and sailors during the latter part of the 18th Century and particularly during the American Revolutionary War.  It could also have been used by infantry soldiers but the style and use of brass mounts (as opposed to steel) makes me think that is probably naval in origin.  The dagger has a carved horn spiral grip that is bound with copper banding.  The style of the grip is very reminiscent of English naval and infantry hangers of the period.  The grip is complete with no damage or repairs.  The blade is double-edged and still extremely sharp and condition of the blade is excellent. Both hilt and blade are solid with no movement.  Blade length is 9 inches (14 inches overall).  An attractive piece.

English C.1760 Cut Steel Ivory Hanger by Harvey

english-harvey-hanger-sword-2

A very good and early English C.1760 Cut Steel Ivory Hanger by Harvey.  The Birmingham sword making family were very prolific and there were a number of family members who worked from the mid-18th Century right through the 19th Century.  I would say that this sword was probably made by the first Harvey – Samuel Harvey – who was in operation from 1748-1800.  This short sword is of fine quality and comprises a cut steel pommel and crossguard.  The grip is made from ivory and is of spiral,  grooved shape.  The plain blade has a deeply impressed mark of HARVEY near the blade forte.  The blade is double-edged towards the end of the point.  Condition of the hanger is good with dark age toning to the blade and appropriate age wear in places.  Blade length is 14 inches (20 inches overall).

French Napoleonic Naval Officer’s Dirk

french-napoleonic-naval-dirk-2

A scarce French Napoleonic Naval Officer’s Dirk with a large ribbed ebony and brass mounted grip.  The blade is double-edged and still extremely sharp and would have been a very effective stabbing weapon on board a sailing ship and with combat at close quarters.  The condition of the dirk is excellent for its great age and there is no damage of repairs of any consequence.  The blade has only very light speckling and staining in places.  The dagger has great balance and weight in the hand.  There is no scabbard.  Both hilt and blade are rock solid and with no movement – they have never been apart and the brass hilt mounts have a very pleasing honey age colour – not been cleaned.  A seldom encountered piece. Blade length is 8 inches (12 inches overall).

English C.1780’s Naval Seaman’s Cutlass

british-georgian-naval-cutlass-2

An excellent and probably unique English C.1780’s Naval Seaman’s Cutlass.  Comprises a distinctive bound corded grip that is reminiscent of contemporary petty officer’s baleen cosh’s that were used to keep order on board a ship.  This was added at the time and obviously done by a sailor whilst on board.  It has been done exceptionally well and typical of the skills of the British Napoleonic seaman.  The blade is slightly curved and stamped with an official crown and GR mark that is found on British Napoleonic naval cutlasses of the period.  The blade has a great dark age patina – has never been cleaned and is a real sleeper.  Both hilt and blade are rock solid – no movement whatsoever.  Blade length is 23.5 inches (28.5 inches overall).  Have never seen a cutlass like this one before and doubt that you will ever come across another one again.

Scottish Napoleonic Infantry Flank Officer’s Sword

british-napoleonic-infantry-sword-3

A scarce example of a Scottish Napoleonic Infantry Flank Officer’s Sword.  This sword would have been carried throughout the Napoleonic Wars and is of a type that was copied from contemporary cavalry officers’ swords in that it has a stirrup hilt and curved blade – in fact the infantry officers’ swords were actually far more curved than the cavalry swords to the point where the appear to be quite impractical in the field of battle.  This example is not too curved and would have had some effectiveness when used in the field.  It has a blue and gilt blade that has now faded but still shows some colour in places and is maker marked to George Hunter and Co of Edinburgh (1797-1822) who supplied officers’ swords to Scottish infantry regiments during this period.  Is rare to find a sword from this maker – this is the first that I have ever come across.  The sword still retains some of its original blue and gilt decoration now faded.  Some light wear to the blade in places.  Comes complete with its original brass scabbard (missing mouthpiece) and carrying chain.  Blade length is 24 inches (29.5 inches overall).  A hard to find piece for the collector of Scottish Napoleonic swords.

English C.1760 Infantryman’s Hanger Sword

english-1760-infantry-hanger-sword-2

A rare example of an English C.1760 Infantryman’s Hanger Sword.  This is a complete example of the type of sword carried during the American Revolutionary War by British forces.  To see similar examples of this type of sword I would recommend you looking in Swords of the American Revolution by George Neumann – there are a number of hangers very much like this one that were carried British infantry soldiers both before and during the war.  This example has a large wooden grip bound with brass twistwire and with a brass knuckleguard, shell guard and pommel.  The blade is single-fullered, slightly curved and double-edged towards the point.  The overall condition of the sword is very good – unsusual to find the original twistwire to the grip.  Both blade and hilt are rock solid – no movement and they have always been together as evidenced by the tang button.  Swords from this period of time are very hard to come across nowadays and especially those that can be connected with the American Revolutionary War period.  Blade length is 25 inches (29.5 inches overall).

18th Century Scottish Staghorn Belt Knife

An original and complete 18th Century Scottish Staghorn Belt Knife.  This is an extremely rare example and seldom come into the market as most were well used and ultimately discarded over time.  This distinctive knife has a staghorn grip with a fluted brass pommel.  The blade is hand wrought and quite thick and would have made a very sturdy weapon or tool.  These knives would have been carried by Scottish Highlanders as part of their assortment of edged weapons, including dirk and broadsword.  It would have been a very handy weapon and everyday utility tool.  The knife has had no repairs or damage and the wear and dark age patination to the blade.

Imperial German WW1 Trench Dagger Knife

imperial-german-trench-dagger-3

A fine and complete Imperial German WW1 Trench Dagger Knife.  These daggers were purchased privately and there is a wide variety of examples and the collecting of Imperial German trench knives is a whole area of collecting by itself.  A very good book for the collector of these daggers is German Combat Knives 1914-1945 by Christian Mery – excellent reference and plenty of full colour photographs .  This dagger is in good condition for its age and comprises a steel, black painted hilt and a chequered composite grip.  The blade is typically plain and sharpened for field use.  The dagger comes complete with its original black painted steel scabbard and the belt loop and fastening press button still remains – most examples encountered today have lost this fastener.  Condition of the dagger is very good overall.  Blade length is 6 inches (10.5 inches overall).

French WW1 Trench Dagger Stiletto

french-ww1-trench-dagger-3

A very scarce and rare French WW1 Trench Dagger Stiletto with turned wooden grip and brass pommel band.  This dagger has been personalised by having an original pre-WW1 (dated 1913) French 10 Centimes coin that has been attached below the hilt ferrule.  The blade is of stiletto form and would have been very effective and deadly during a trench raid.  The design of the dagger is commonly associated with French troops of WW1 and seems to be a style that they adopted throughout the conflict.  The dagger comes complete with its rarely encountered leather and metal scabbard.  Condition of the dagger is  very good for its age and there is only light wear in places.  Blade length is 5.5 inches (10 inches overall).

WW1 Scottish Cameron Highlanders Trench Club

cameron-highlanders-trench-club-2

An unusual and scarce WW1 Scottish Cameron Highlanders Trench Club.  This appears to be a privately made item and comprises a hardwood faceted head that has had some nails driven into it.  There is a brass pommel to the top.  The shaft is wooden with a cork covering and a brass ferrule to the bottom and bound cord.  There is also a leather hand strap and a white metal regimental badge to the Cameron Highlanders attached to the shaft.  These trench clubs were very popular in WW1 and extremely effective during the numerous trench raids that took place during the war.  Most were made by the soldiers themselves and there are many variations to be found and this is probably a unique example.  The Cameron Highlanders were heavily involved in many campaigns during WW1, including the Marne (1914/18), Ypres (1914-18) and the Somme (1916).  Condition of the trench club is good with some light dents in places and age darkening to the brass.  Length of the trench club is 17.5 inches.
