A very good English Napoleonic Royal Navy Petty Officer’s Cosh made from baleen (whale keratin found inside their mouths and used to sieve organisms). These cosh’s were made for keeping order on board HM ships and comprised strands of interwoven baleen bound with cord. The cosh is very flexible and bendy and would have been pretty effective when wielded at speed. At each end of the cosh there is a lead ball that would have provided a very effective deterrent to disorderly crew members. Condition of the cosh is good with some service wear in places. It is also unusually long as most examples are a little shorter. Length of the cosh is 14 inches.
