French Napoleonic Heavy Cuirassier Trooper’s Sword. An unusual and very early example of this iconic Napoleonic sword that was carried by elite French cavalry cuirassiers. Most examples encountered are dated and maker marked to the spine of the blade but this sword dates from the early 1800’s before this practice became standard. It also has a clipped point to the blade only seen on early examples as opposed to the more common spear-pointed blades of later swords.
Brass four-bar hilt
The large hilt is of brass, four-bar construction and the grip is wrapped in leather. The blade is multi-fullered. The hilt has numerous markings including a Versailles maker mark. In good overall condition – grip lacking twistwire – easily replaced. Light pitting to blade. Blade length is 38 inches (45 inches overall).
