Original and rare Indonesian 19th Century Decorated Bronze Lantaka Cannon
An Indonesian 19th Century Decorated Bronze Lantaka Cannon. These cast bronze swivel cannons were mounted on small craft and merchantmen and were effective in providing an easily manoeuverable weapon. They were a popular choice for the defence of ships against pirates in South East Asia, the Phillipines and Malaysia. They also served as a form of currency and were passed down from family to family as heirlooms. This example is typical of the type and comprises a bronze barrel that is decorated with a series of geometric and swirling devices. The end of the barrel is flared. A simple wooden stand is also provided. Please note that this lantaka is bronze and consequently, extremely heavy.
Condition of the Lantaka
In good overall condition for its age with commensurate wear.
Specifications of the Lantaka
Length of the lantaka is 27 inches.
