A good example of a Javanese 1900’s Kris Dagger and Scabbard. Comes complete with a fine, hand decorated brass scabbard and polished hardwood mounts. In good overall condition for its age. The distinctive wavy blade (indicative of Kris’s) has been produced with typical forged layering and the carved hardwood grip is particularly intricate with designs of foliage and abstract shapes. This is an indicator of good quality and the kris is showing definite age and so I would date this example from the early-mid 20th Century.
Blade layering
The production of a kris blade includes a process of layering and forging that would have added considerable extra strength to the blade. It is a process of blade making that has been undertaken for many centuries throughout the world and I many cultures, from the Vikings through to the Japanese Samurai sword makers. Blade length is 13.5 inches (17 inches overall). This would make a fine addition to a collection of antique kris daggers and displays particularly well.
