Scottish Napoleonic Militia Fencible Sword

scottish-napoleonic-militia-sword-3

scottish-1828-pattern-broadsword-IMAGE

A highly unusual and fine example of a Scottish Napoleonic Militia Fencible Sword.  The Militia Act of 1794 raised a number of Scottish militias or fencible regiments whose purpose was primarily to protect the country from the expected invasion from Revolutionary France.  This is a very intriguing sword and I have only ever seen one other similar piece many years ago that had the same type of cruciform hilt and wide blade.  The example I saw previously was engraved to the scabbard locket with the name of the Argyle Fencibles.  I was unfortunately unable to purchase the sword but always remembered it because it was so unusual and consequently rare.  The sword itself is of very high quality manufacture and comprises a gilt brass and carved ivory grip with distinctive cruciform quillons.  The blade is extremely wide and with a narrow median ridge that runs the full length of the blade.  There is also a distinctive Scottish Highland basket hilt pommel.  The sword itself seems quite impractical when viewed in a military combat role but that could be said for a number of official military patterns of the period.  The sword comes complete with its original leather and brass mounted scabbard that is of the same kind of style found on regular British Army military scabbards of the Napoleonic period.  Condition of the sword is excellent for its age and there is very little wear to the blade.  There is a small age crack to the grip near the ferrule.  This is an intriguing sword and of large proportions and would make an impressive display piece.  Blade length is 26 inches (32 inches overall).

C.1900’s Gurkha Kukri with Decorated Hilt and Blade

kukri-decorated-hilt-3

A large example of a C.1900’s Gurkha Kukri with Decorated Hilt and Blade.  This is a very well made antique Nepalese kukri with finely carved horn pommel and deeply engraved decoration to the blade.  The kukri is larger than those normally encountered and is made for use and is not a tourist/decorative piece.  The kukri comes complete with a leather scabbard and pockets for by-knives.  The kukri is a Nepalese knife that exhibits an inwardly curved edge and is used as both a tool and a weapon.  It is regarded as a basic utility knife of the Nepalese people and is the primary edged weapon of the Nepalese Army, the Royal Gurkha Rifles and of all Gurkha regiments throughout the world.  There are many famous tales of Gurkha soldiers using the kukri as their primary weapon of choice when in close combat.  Condition of the kukri is very good overall.  Blade length is 14 inches (17 inches overall).

British C.1800’s Naval Midshipman’s Dirk Dagger

naval-midshipmans-dirk-2

A good example of a British C.1800’s Naval Midshipman’s Dirk Dagger.  With ribbed bone grip and cut steel hilt.  The globular pommel has been blued and retains most of the original finish.  The blade is double-edged and with a prominent raised forte.  These small dirks would have been privately purchased and usually carried at the belt.  Condition of the dirk is good – there is some damage to the top of the grip near the pommel on one side.  The dirk came with a scabbard locket and throat so will add these aswell – could probably be restored.  Blade length is 5.25 inches (9 inches overall).

English Dated 1786 and Named 22nd Regiment of Foot Powder Horn

english-18th-century-powder-horn-1

A unique English Dated 1786 and Named 22nd Regiment of Foot Powder Horn.  The 22nd Foot (Cheshire Regiment) has its roots going back to 1689 when the Duke of Norfolk raised a regiment of foot in Chester and was a reaction against the threat of the former King James II to re-take the English throne.  In the same year it saw service in Ireland and there followed a long and illustrious military career for the regiment.During the American War of Independence, it saw service in America and was involved in many campaigns during that conflict.  For a more detailed account of the regiment’s history, please go to HERE.  The powder horn is engraved with a royal designation for King George III and the regimental numbers.  To the other side is the name of the soldier William Coyle and the date 1786.  Condition of the powder horn is very good – would say that the wooden nozzle and brass plug are later additions.

19th Century William Rodgers Silver Toothpick Knife

william-rodgers-silver-knife-3

A very fine example of a 19th Century William Rodgers Silver Toothpick Knife in terrific condition.  The knife comprises an elaborately decorated hallmarked silver handle – the hallmarks are at the bottom of the grip and difficult to make out but are there – see the images below.  The blade is double-edged and retains all the original nickel finish.  The knife comes complete with its original stitched leather scabbard with belt strap.  The Sheffield knife making company of William Rodgers was a famous British cutler and known for producing thousands of quality knives throughout the 19th Century.  They were a great exporter of their knives and many went to the American market and this style of knife would have been very effective as a small knife that could be carried either on a belt or in a pocket or bag.  A very attractive knife.  Blade length is 4.5 inches (9 inches overall).

French Model 1822 Cavalry Officer’s Sword

french-model-1822-cavalry-officers-sword-3

A superb and high quality example of a French Model 1822 Cavalry Officer’s Sword.  This sword is likely to date from the Crimean War (1854-1856) period and was manufactured in Germany by Gebruder Weyersberg who are a noted German sword maker of the period who went on to supply both combatants during the American Civil War.  They are mentioned in many reference books about US cavalry swords of the Civil War.  The sword comprises a decorative cast brass, three-bar hilt and is the grip bound with fishskin and twistwire.  Grip is in very good condition.

Very good etched blade

What makes this sword special and takes it above the usual examples of this model is the terrifically etched blade – most blades of this model are actually plain.  The etching is very crisp and includes martial trophies, intricate floral motifs and military banners.  Condition of the blade is excellent.  Comes complete with its original scabbard.  Blade length is 35 inches (41 inches overall).

English Napoleonic Naval Officer’s Cutlass Sword

english-napoleonic-naval-officer-cutlass-3

A terrific and extremely rare English Napoleonic Naval Officer’s Cutlass Sword.  Have never seen one like this before and it is likely that it could be a one-off example made especially for an individual.  It is certainly not an official regulation pattern and so is quite intriguing.  I would date this cutlass to c.1780’s-1800.  It has a very distinctive attachment of the knuckleguard to the pommel and this form of attachment is noted primarily in naval cutlasses of the period.  I have added a couple of pommel shots from English naval cutlasses of the period that I have sold previously and there is a definite similarity.

Maker marked to Read if Dublin

The quality and style of the cutlass indicates use by an officer as does the scabbard locket which bears the maker’s name of Read of Dublin.  This company were in operation from 1787-1795 so we can comfortably date this sword within this period.  The hilt comprises a series of curled hilt bars that emanate from a central knuckleguard.  The hilt retains the original black japanning paint.  Blade is plain and single-fullered and in very good condition.  Comes with a leather and brass mounted scabbard in fine shape.  A rare piece of early British Napoleonic naval edged weaponry.  Blade length is 22.5 inches (28 inches overall).

19th Century Silver-Mounted Moroccan Jambiya Dagger

silver-19th-century-jambiya-dagger-3

Excellent 19th Century silver mounted Moroccan Jambiya dagger.  With extensive decoration to both the hilt and scabbard – is very intricate and comprises a series of inter-twined floral patterns.  The blade is typically plain and double-edged towards the point.  Condition of the Jambiya is good with some age wear in places – actually adds to the character of the piece.

Good quality example of a Jambiya Dagger

C.1700’s European Gilt Brass and Chalcedony Dagger

1700-gilt-chalcedony-dagger-2

free-shipping-1

A very attractive C.1700’s European Gilt Brass and Chalcedony Dagger.  This is a large dagger that is probably French in origin and comprises a gilt brass hilt with very distinctive faceted hilt with upturned finials and fluted chalcedony quillons.  The grip is bound with steel twistwire.  The blade is of triangular form and plain and of high quality so it is probable that this was meant for use and was not just a decorative piece.

Dagger in good condition

Condition of the dagger is very good and there is no damage or repairs.  The blade has a fine age patina.  Blade length is 16 inches (21 inches overall).

C.1900’s Antique Diving Military Knife and Scabbard

1900s-diving-military-knife-3

A highly unusual C.1900’s Antique Diving Military Knife and Scabbard.  Have never seen this type of military knife before but it does bear a great resemblance to a military diving knife in that the hilt is brass and there is a solid brass scabbard of a type favoured by divers – the knife also fits deep into the scabbard as is the case with diving knives.  The grip also comprises a chequered grip with a plain brass cartouche.

Brass scabbard with original black paint

The knife is certainly smaller than the usual diver’s knife but I would be interested in any other explanations.  The blade is plain with double-edged blade and triangular point.  The brass scabbard has been painted black and retains its original paint.  Cannot be sure what nation it comes from as it is unmarked but have been informed that it is Imperial German in origin.  Blade length is 4.5 inches (9.5 inches overall).

19th Century Finnish Pukko Knife and Scabbard

antique-pukko-knife-3

A very early example of a 19th Century Finnish Pukko Knife and Scabbard.    These distinctive knives are associated with Finland and other parts of Sandinavia and are still manufactured in these areas.  They come in a variety of hilt styles and this knife is distinguished by the deep carving of scrolling foliage to the birchwood hilt.  The blade is double-edged and plain.

Pukko carving very important

In Finland and northern Scandinavia, the carving of the Pukko’s hilt is very important and great pride is taken during this process.  Over generations, this knife has become intimately tied to Nordic culture.  The knife comes complete with its original leather scabbard.  Condition of the knife is good for its age – some wear to the blade.  A rare early find.  Blade length is 2.75 inches (6 inches overall).

US Mountain Man Indian Wolf Jaw Knife

mountain-man-knife-3

A very impressive US Mountain Man Indian Wolf Jaw Knife.  This is a large knife that would have been carried by a hunter in the far north of the United States and in the wilderness areas of the country.  It is associated with Indian tribes and mountain men who choose to live in the mountains and wastes of such areas as Alaska.  The knife was probably made in the 20th Century but cannot be certain as to its exact date of manufacture.

Wolf Jaw hilt

Is certainly of high quality and comprises a large wolf jaw hilt that retains a number of wolf teeth.  The blade is large and wide and wickedly sharp.  The knife comes complete with a thick leathet, stitched scabbard.  Condition is excellent throughout.  Blade length is 6 inches (12 inches overall).

C.1770 English European Copper-hilted Dagger

late-18th-century-knife-2

A nice example of a C.1770 English European Copper-hilted Dagger.  This is a good sized and weighted military dagger that dates from the end of the 18th Century and from the quality of its manufacture, would guess that it was carried by an officer.  It comprises an attractive copper grip of spiral, fluted form that is attached to a double-edged plain blade.

Hilt of smallsword style

The style of the grip is very similar to the hilts of contemporary smallswords, although I don’t believe that this has come from a smallsword because there is no evidence of a hole at the pommel where the knucklebow would have been attached.  Condition is excellent and it is very comfortable when held in the hand.  Similar examples (particularly blade profiles) of these American Revolutionary War period knives can be seen in George C. Neumann’s, Swords and Blades of the American Revolution.  Blade length is 7.5 inches (11.5 inches overall).

Prussian Model 1852 Cavalry Trooper’s Sword

german-model-1852-cavalry-sword-3

An excellent example of a Prussian Model 1852 Cavalry Trooper’s Sword.  This model of German cavalry sword was carried from the mid-19th Century and right through to the First World War.  It is of very sturdy construction and would have been carried by heavy cavalry troopers.  This sword, like most Model 1852’s is regimentally marked to both the hilt and the scabbard and appears to have been re-issued a number of times as was common during its service life.  The sword comprises a large open, bowl hilt and ribbed leather grip.  The hilt retains its original leather finger loop that was used to keep a strong hold onto the grip – in most cases, these loops have been lost or rotted away.

Sword comes complete with scabbard

The blade is plain and slightly curved.  Comes complete with a heavy steel scabbard.  Condition of the sword is very good overall – there aresome edge nicks to the blade that have been  sharpened down near the point.  Blade length is 34 inches (40 inches overall).

C.1900’s Kings Own Scottish Borderers Cross-hilted Broadsword

kings-own-scottish-borderers-sword-3

scottish-1828-pattern-broadsword-IMAGE

An excellent C.1900’s Kings Own Scottish Borderers Cross-hilted Broadsword.  This sword would have been carried by an officer in the regiment and dates from the early years of the 20th Century and was carried during the reign of King Edward VII (1901-1910).  The cross-hilt was introduced during the latter years of the 19th Century as a practical alternative to the rather cumbersome basket hilt that was traditionally carried by Scottish Highland infantry officers.  It could be used both as a fighting sword and also a dress sword.

Condition of the sword is excellent

In later examples such as this one, the hilt was interchangeable with the basket hilt by the unscrewing of the pommel.  Condition of the sword is excellent and the grip retains all of the original fishskin and twistwire.  The blade is etched with numerous regimental motifs, royal cypher of King Edward VII and royal crown.  The blade is also etched with numerous battle honours of this famous regiment.  To learn more about this very old British infanty regiment please go to HERE.  The sword comes complete with its original nickel-plated scabbard.  Blade length is 33 inches (39.5 inches overall).

C.1770’s American Revolutionary War Officer’s Smallsword

american-1760-smallsword-2

A seldom seen and ultra rare C.1770’s American Revolutionary War Officer’s Smallsword.  This sword would have been carried by an American officer during the conflict and was manufactured in America by a local blacksmith and comprises a home-made and strikingly simple iron hilt of typical American form.  The blade is most likely of European origin and would have been mated with the hilt in the field.  The blade is older than the hilt and probably from an earlier (c.1740’s) discarded smallsword that has been utilised during the conflict.  This was very common, particularly with American troops who had difficulties accessing new weapons and were very resourceful in re-using older and redundant swords and firearms.

Traces of the original etching to the blade

The blade has traces of its original etched decoration near the blade forte and includes hunting scenes to both sides.  The grip is bound with steel twistwire.  This type of American smallsword is featured in the seminal work on edged weapons carried during the American Revolutionary War – Swords and Blades of the American Revolution by George C Neumann.  A very similar example is pictured in his book – see images below.  Blade length is 30.5 inches (36 inches overall).

Antique Islamic Decorated Brass Box Casket

islamic-brass-box-1

An interesting Antique Islamic Decorated Brass Box Casket.  This brass box probably dates from either the end of the 19th Century or into the early years of the 20th and comprises an extensively decorated lid and sides.  The decoration includes the use of Islamic script and I would guess that it has some religious or Koranic significance.  The lid of the box is held together with a thin brass clasp.

Geometric designs to the inside of the box

Inside the box there is a softwood lining with inlaid geometric designs.  Condition of the box is good overall and it has a good used and rustic look.  Dimensions of the box are 10 inches (width) and with a height of 4 inches.

19th Century Austrian Bohemian Decorated Glass Vase

austrian-glass-vase-1

A fine example of a 19th Century Austrian Bohemian Decorated Glass Vase.  Probably produced in either Austria, Bohemia (Czechoslovakia) or even Germany.  The style is typical of the mid-late 19th Century and comprises a deep green glass body that has been profusely decorated with gilt floral patterns.  The end of the vase is ruffled and splayed.

Condition of the vase is excellent

At the base of the vase the glass has been deeply cut into a series of channels and produces a very attractive effect.  Condition of the vase is excellent with no damage that I can see.  Am surprised that after all these years the condition of the gilt is so fine – no serious rubbing or wear.  With the correct light on the vase it would make a stunning display piece.
