French Model 1874 Epee Bayonet with matching numbers

french-model-1874-bayonet-3

An excellent example of a French  Model 1874 Epee Bayonet with matching numbers to the hilt and scabbard.  This was the standard infantry bayonet of the French Army at the end of the 19th Century and well into the 20th when it was replaced by the cruciform-bladed bayonet commonly seen during the First World War.  They were produced in very large quantities but very few are found with matching numbers as most bayonets and scabbards are mis-matched.

Condition of the bayonet is excellent

This would have been quite normal as original bayonet and scabbard could easily have parted company during their lifetimes and they were all made to relatively the same specifications and so a bayonet would always fit another scabbard.  The blade is dated to April 1879 and was made at the government manufactory of St Etienne.  There are also inspector’s stamps and manufactory marks to the blade forte.  Condition of the bayonet is excellent with smooth and dark patination to the hilt and scabbard.  There is no pitting or staining to the blade – it is in virtually mint condition.  A fine piece.

Indo-Persian Dagger – 19th Century horn hilt and decorated blade

indo-persian-dagger-3

Excellent Indo-Persian Dagger – 19th Century horn hilt and decorated blade.  With carved and shaped horn grip and bone, possibly ivory, pommel.  The blade is extensively and deeply decorated to its whole length with hunting scenes involving the chasing of wild animals with hunters on horseback.  This type of scene is typical of Indo-Persian swords and daggers of this period.  It is also inlaid with brass.

Dagger comes complete with original scabbard

The dagger comes complete with its original stitched leather scabbard that has a bone tip.  The blade is double-edged and still quite sharp.  Condition is very good throughout.  This is a very typical style of dagger from the 19th Century and would make a nice addition to any collection of Indo-Persian antique weaponry.  Blade length is 9.5 inches (13.5 inches overall).

19th Century US Navy Brass-hilted Officer’s Sword – Horstmann

us-naval-militia-sword-2

A highly unusual 19th Century US Navy Brass-hilted Officer’s Sword – Horstmann.  This US Civil War period naval officer’s sword has a very well etched blade made by German sword maker, Horstmann and Sons.  The brass stirrup hilt is reminiscent of US infantry militia swords of the period but I have never seen one that is associated with the US Navy.  Both hilt and blade have always been together as evidenced by the smooth and darkened tang button.

Sword decorated with numerous naval motifs

The blade is decorated with numerous motifs including US eagle, anchor, scrolling foliage, stars and stripes shield, USN scroll and military lances.  The blade forte is stamped with the King’s head German Weyersberg sword making motif.  Condition of the sword is excellent and the blade etching is still bright and crisp.  No scabbard.  A rare piece.  Blade length is 30.5 inches (35 inches overall).

Antique African 19th Century Warrior’s Spear

african-antique-spear-2

An excellent antique 19th Century African warrior’s fighting spear.  With hand wrought iron spear head of leaf-shaped form and with distinctive medial ridge to the centre.  Dark, hardwood grip and distinctive turned iron foot.   The blade has a great colour and forged appearance.  Am not sure what particular region or tribe this is associated with and have ascribed it an African origin but open to any other suggestions.  What I like about the spear is the quality of its construction as this factor can vary widely in the field of African bladed weapons.  We are on safe ground with this one.

Spear would make a great display piece

The spear has got a great feel and weight and would make a great display piece, particularly when combined with a shield, axes and knobkerries.  The collecting of antique African weaponry is becoming quite popular and I would guess that it will become a strong collecting field in the future, with prices rising in parallel.  Length of the spear is 53 inches.

Imperial German Model 1898/05 Butcher Bayonet – Frister and Rossmann

german-s98-frister-rossmann-bayonet-3

Original Imperial German Model 1898/05 Butcher Bayonet – Frister and Rossmann.  Made by the company of Frister and Rossman  of Berlin – they were originally sewing machine makers who turned to producing bayonets during the First World War.  This was quite common to many German manufacturers, especially as the war progressed and traditional arms makers could not cope with demand from the army.  These bayonets were issued to German infantry troops throughout the war although towards the end of the war, ersatz bayonets took over these model pattern bayonets.  The bayonet is clearly maker marked to the blade forte and also has inspector’s stamps to the blade spine and scabbard.  The ribbed wooden grips are held together with steel riveted screws.

Bayonet complete with original scabbard

The bayonet comes complete with its original steel scabbard – both hilt and scabbard with dark age patination – has not been cleaned or messed about with.  Blade with appropriate age staining in places.  Is an Imperial German bayonet maker that is not as commonly encountered in the bayonet collecting market.  Blade length is 14.5 inches (20 inches overall).

19th Century Imperial Chinese Military Dadao Broadsword

chinese-19th-century-dadao-military-sword-3

A very good example of a large 19th Century Imperial Chinese Military Dadao Broadsword.  These swords were carried by ordinary Chinese infantrymen during the 19th Century and well into the 20th Century.

Sword scabbard with fishskin and iron mounts

The sword has iron hilt and scabbard mounts, covered in black painted fishskin.  The grip is bound with the original black cotton binding.  The heavy blade would have been devastating in the field of combat.  Condition of the blade is excellent.  Blade length is 27 inches (34 inches overall).

Collection of British Sheffield Antique Mother-of-Pearl Penknives

mother-of-pearl-penknives-1

Excellent collection of British Sheffield antique mother-of-pearl penknives.  They probably date from the late-19th to the early 20th Century.  It is likely that these were used as fruit knives or handy general purpose knives that could be slipped into a pocket.  There are eight in total and they exhibit the high quality that you would associate with Sheffield-made knives.  Sheffield knives were exported throughout the world but were particularly popular in the United States during the 19th Century where the famous bowie knife was manufactured in large quantities in Sheffield and then shipped to the United States where they became part of that country’s martial history.

Mother-of-Pearl Penknives in good condition

Maker names to the penknives include Rodgers, J B James, Doidge, Wheatley, and W. Gray.  These were all famous Sheffield blade-makers who made a wide variety of knives for a global market.  Blade lengths vary from 4 inches to 5.5 inches.  Condition is good overall – one knife with heavy pitting to blade.

English/European 14th Century Infantry Archer’s Short Sword Dagger

medieval-sword-2

A terrifically rare and original English/European 14th Century Infantry Archer’s Short Sword Dagger.  This sword was excavated in Belgium some years ago and is of a type that would have been carried by an ordinary infantry soldier or archer in the field.  It could be either described as a short sword or a very large dagger but would have been the owner’s last line of defence. Typically, archers carried this type of weapon and would have used it in defence once they had used all their arrows.  It is of very simple form as would be expected and comprises a rounded pommel pommel and crossguard finial.  To the other side is an upwardly curving “hook” that fits perfectly around the finger and would have steadied the hand.  The grip would have been bound in wood, overlaid with strips of leather.  Condition is very good and there has been no breakages – in stabilised condition.

Most Medieval swords now in museums

This is a very rare and unusual piece and very few weapons from the Medieval period have survived and most now reside in museums.  Blade length is 15 inches (20.5 inches overall).

17th Century Military Officer’s Cavalry Broadsword

17th-century-sword-rapier-2

An excellent and unusual 17th Century Military Officer’s Cavalry Broadsword.  Most likely carried by an officer and with a very substantial multi-fullered blade.  Deeply stamped to both blade fortes and with traces of original impressed lettering to the top of the blade.  The hilt is quite unusual and features a pierced guard that is reminiscent in style to contemporary Spanish main-gauche daggers – it is possible that this sword had an accompanying main-gauche dagger and the hilt of the broadsword imitated the design.  With wide, hand-wrought crossguard and finials.  These matching swords and daggers were very common during this period.  The use of a fleur-de-lys design might indicate a French connection but could just be a decorative style.  The grip is bound with steel twistwire and turks-heads.

Condition of the sword is excellent

The pommel is quite substantial and would have given this large sword good balance.  The blade is well made with good flexibility – always a sign of quality.  Condition is very good for its great age – no problems that I can see.  Blade length is 38 inches (44 inches overall).

English C.1690’s Dog-Head Naval Cutlass

english-dutch-17th-century-cutlass-2

An extremely rare English C.1690’s Dog-Head Naval Cutlass.  These swords are likely to be of a style of “brass hilted hangers” that were ordered in 1692 by the British Board of Ordnance and were produced for issue to sailors or “matrosses”.  There is also a contemporary reference to these swords as being “dog headed hangers for matrosses”.  The hilt style is thought to have been influenced by contemporary Sinhalese (Sri-Lankan) swords and were carried by sailors in the service of the Dutch East India Company.  It is thought that the styles were then copied by English and German sword makers and sold on to the British Board of Ordnance.  This example is a more elaborate version of those normally encountered and comprises a brass, two-bar bilobate hilt with an elaborately decorated cast brass grip and pommel.  The shell guard has a monster head to the underside.  The blade is stamped to both sides with a maker’s name but it is difficult to make out.  The blade is single-fullered, double-edged and slightly swollen near the point.

Earliest example of English naval cutlass

Condition is excellent for its great age with only a narrow gap in the blade towards the end where it has worn away.  This is probably the earliest known officially sanctioned English naval cutlass and consequently super rare – very few ever come on the market.  This type of cutlass is featured both in my book – The Sword in Britain 1600-1700 and Boarders Away by Gilkerson – see pics below.  Blade length is 29 inches (34 inches overall).

British C.1900’s / WW1 Army Officer’s Campaign Cutlery

british-army-campaign-cutlery-1

An excellent set of British c.1900’s / WW1 British Army Officer’s campaign cutlery.  Of top quality manufacture and with polished bone handles and electro-plated knife, fork and spoon.  The cutlery is deeply stamped with maker’s stamps to the spoon and knife.  These campaign cutlery sets were very popular during the Boer War and WW1 and would have been privately purchased by an officer and were an essential part of their military campaign kit.  There is a plated cartouche inset to each of the bone handles – officers usually added their initials but this example is unusually plain.

Full working order

All in full working order with the opening and shutting actions still sharp and crisp.  The average length of each piece is 7.5 inches.  An unusual and very personal addition for the collector of British military Boer War and WW1 collectables.  These military campaign cutlery sets are quite scarce now as many were broken up and lost over the years or used post-war until no longer serviceable and eventually discarded.

Harvey Withers Antique Swords

antique-sword-images-1-copy

I have been collecting and dealing in antique swords and edged weapons since 1998 and over that time, have been lucky enough to handle many thousands of antique military swords.  They have ranged from ancient Celtic warrior’s swords to superbly decorated 17th Century rapiers, to the very last cavalry sabres used on the battlefields of WWI.  Below are some examples of swords that I have bought and sold over the years.

Antique Swords and Making Friends

I get a terrific thrill from buying and selling antique swords and there is no greater pleasure than attending auctions, antique arms shows or rooting around antiques shops, looking for a hidden gem.  I have met many collectors over the years and like to think that I have also made many friends in the world of antique sword collecting.  I am proud to say that the key to any positive relationship between buyer and seller is trust and I am happy to say that many of my current customers have been with me from my early days of selling.  Hopefully, it means that I am getting something right!  I have always traded on my reputation for providing original and interesting examples of swords spanning many centuries, coupled with a friendly and efficient approach to customer queries.  Emails are always answered promptly and I like nothing more than a good chat about swords!

Antique Swords and Books for Collectors

I have accumulated many thousands of full colour photographs of the swords that I have purchased and since 2003, have put them to good use by producing a series of price guides and reference books for the collector and student of antique military swords.  Click the images below for more information on all the books that I have authored.

Books will always pay you back many times over

I have always believed that the initial investment in a good reference book will always pay you back many times over and give you the edge when on the hunt for antique swords.  Take a look at my other articles and you will see that I have put together a bibilography of books for the sword collector.  I hope to keep adding to this list and welcome any suggestions.  Just e-mail me here if you have a suggestion for a title to add to the list.  The more knowledgeable we all become can only be a good thing.

Future Articles

As I develop this web site, I hope to produce more articles about collecting antique military swords and importantly, the history of these unique items.  Please check back regularly as I will be regularly adding new articles.

I hope that you will find then both helpful and informative and please do not hesitate to contact me if you wish to submit an article or make a suggestion.

Happy collecting!
Best wishes,

Harvey Withers
