American C.1780 Naval Officer’s Fighting Dirk

american-naval-dirk-3

A complete and rarely encountered example of an American C.1780 Naval Officer’s Fighting Dirk.   This dirk probably dates from the time of the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) and is very typical in its design and style.  American naval dirks of the period are usually quite simple and workmanlike in their design and construction and this appears to follow that style.  The hilt grip is made from a faceted and stained wood and topped with a rounded ivory pommel secured by an iron pommel button.  The hilt ferrule is also faceted to follow the pattern of the grip.

Plain blade and triangular in profile

The blade is plain and triangular in profile and almost stiletto in the way that it tapers to a wicked point.  Would have been a highly effective stabbing weapon.  It comes complete with a steel scabbard that has no decoration apart from a faceted ball-type chape.  Condition is excellent for its great age – end of the blade is a little bent but could probably be straightened without too much trouble – have not touched it.  Is a great piece for the collector of American Revolutionary War naval edged weapons.  Blade length is 11.5 inches (16 inches overall).

British Indian Army 19th Century Irregular Horse Trooper’s Sword

indian-irregular-horse-sword-2

A super rare British Indian Army 19th Century Irregular Horse Trooper’s Sword.  This is a truly unusual sword and of a type issued to irregular horse cavalry units serving in the British Indian Army during the mid-19th Century.  The construction of the sword hilt is very peculiar in that the grip is made from cast steel and made to represent a chequered grip.  The hilt is British in style and follows contemporary pierced scroll hilts of a type seen in infantry officer’s swords, most notably, the 1857 Pattern Scottish Field Officer’s Sword.

Hilt manufactured in Britain

I would guess that the hilts were manufactured in Britain, from where they were exported to India and mounted with local Indian tulwar blades.  There is a very interesting discussion about these swords hereThe irregular cavalry units that would probably have carried these swords included Probyn’s Horse, Wale’s Horse and the Punjab Cavalry.  Condition is good considering that it would have had a lot of use – with commensurate service wear- some losses to top of grip.  No scabbard – would probably have been of tulwar form.  Blade length is 29.5 inches (36 inches overall).

Austrian Napoleonic Cavalry Dragoon Officer’s Sword

austrian-napoleonic-cavalry-sword-3

An original and scarce Austrian Napoleonic Cavalry Dragoon Officer’s Sword.  This sword would originally have had a fold-out attack hilt but that has long gone but the sword is still an attractive and seldom seen piece.  The sword comprises a cut steel with scalloped edges to the knuckleguard, ferrule and slot hilt.  The grip retains all of its original leather and steel twistwire to the grip.  Blade is plain and single-fullered.

Complete with leather and brass mounted scabbard

The sword comes complete with a contemporary brass and leather mounted scabbard with frog button to the locket.  These swords would have been carried by light cavalry units and was used from the late-18th Century right through the Napoleonic Wars.  Austrian swords are not common in the market, particularly in Western Europe and the USA, which is quite strange considering the influence and size of the Austrian army during this period.  Condition is good with a fine dark age patina to the hilt.  Blade length is 30 inches (35 inches overall).

Prussian 1848 Experimental Naval Cutlass

prussian-naval-cutlass-2

free-shipping-1

A super rare Prussian 1848 Experimental Naval Cutlass of massive proportions.  This is the only example of a very distinctive naval sword that is likely to have been based on contemporary Prussian cavalry sword hilts of the period although the hilt appears to be of a larger size.  Is an extremely well made cutlass as would be expected of a Prussian military edged weapon.  Comprises an open basket hilt with very thick hilt bars and ribbed leather grip.

Hilt dated to 1848 and with royal cypher

The hilt is dated to 1848 and features the “FW” royal cypher for Emperor Frederick Wilhelm IV (reigned from 1840 – 1861).  The blade is very unusual and has a sawback edge to the top of the blade although it does not appear to be very sharp – wondering whether it would have been used to parry sword blows.  The blade is just under 2 inches at the forte and double-edged towards the end of the blade.  Blade length is 30 inches (36 inches overall).

19th Century African Tuareg Takouba Sword

takouba-sword-and-scabbard-3

A good quality 19th Century African Tuareg Takouba Sword complete with its original leather and brass mounted scabbard.  Most of these brass-hilted takoubas tend to date from the end of the 19th Century.  A very interesting website concerning the history and development of the takouba can be found here.  The Tuareg tribes are a nomadic Berber group found in the Saharan interior of North Africa, particularly Mali, Niger and Algeria.  Interestingly, the name Tuareg means “abandoned by God”, which refers to the fact that they were a pre-Islamic people.  The sword is of typical form, with incised decoration to the brass hilt and distinctive layered and domed pommel.

Hand forged blade

The blade is of local manufacture and hand forged.  The sword comes with a tooled leather and brass scabbard.  Condition of the sword is very good for its age – many of these swords are without their original scabbards because of their inherently fragile construction.  Blade length is 31.5 inches (38.5 inches overall).

19th/20th Century Plains Indian Knife & Tacked Brass Leather Sheath

indian-plains-knife-and-scabbard-2

free-shipping-1

A very fine and original 19th/20th Century Plains Indian Knife & Tacked Brass Leather Sheath.  With wooden multi-riveted handled butcher’s knife and distinctive thick brown leather scabbard with numerous brass tacks to one side.  These knives and scabbards were particularly associated with the Blackfoot tribe of Alberta, Canada and Montana, in the United States.  Scabbard is specially designed with a separate carrying handle – this seems to be a particular style associated with these Indian tribal knives.  The knife is sharpened to one edge and double-edged towards the point.

Knife and scabbard in excellent condition

Condition of the knife and scabbard is very good and the leather is still stiff and strong.  All the original stitching remains and is in good condition – no loss.  The knife also retains most of the original darkened finish to the blade.  Length of the blade is 10 inches (15.5 inches overall).  Length of the scabbard is 16 inches.  A very fine piece.  These knives are quite scarce and seldom found in this condition.

Grantown Strathspey & Craigellachie Volunteers Shoulder Belt Plate

strathspey-napoleonic-shoulder-plate-1

scottish-1828-pattern-broadsword-IMAGE

A super rare Scottish Napoleonic Grantown Strathspey & Craigellachie Volunteers Shoulder Belt Plate.  This was carried by a volunteer in a Scottish Fencible regiment.  The Fencible regiments were raised as a direct result of the perceived threat of invasion by the newly resurgent revolutionary France and were seen as a kind of Home Guard.   The Grant or Strathspey Fencibles were raised in 1793 after the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars and was predominantly a Highland regiment.  The regiment was raised by Sir James Grant of Grant.  The regiment are notorious for have mutinied in 1795 when the Highlanders erroneously believed that they were going to be forced to serve outside of Scotland.  For a more detailed account of the regiment and the Fencible regiments in general, please go to here.

Shoulder belt plate in good condition

Decoration to the plate includes a royal crown, Scottish thistle and English rose.  There is also a flaming(?) coronet above.  The shoulder belt plate is in good condition with some consequent age wear to the engraving.  With good age patina to the rear.  Height of the plate is just over 3 inches.

Australian Named WW1 KIA Officer’s Military Club Pass

australian-ww1-club-pass-1

An Australian Named WW1 KIA Officer’s Military Club Pass.  This was owned by Lieutenant-Colonel Archibald Saltren-Willett of the Royal Garrison Artillery (1st Anzac Heavy Artillery).  He was killed in action on October 11th 1917 in Flanders on the Western Front.  Have not researched his full military career but believe that he was commanding officer of the 66th Heavy artillery Group.  The paperwork that comes with the item also makes mention of two Mention in Despatches.  He was killed at the age of 51 which would have been quite unusual at that time and is buried at the Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery in Belgium.

Killed in action at the age of 51

The ivory pass has the monogram of the Royal Garrison Artillery to one side and the owner’s name to the reverse.  Condition is excellent – is a completely unique piece and important to the collector of Australian military artifacts.

Nationalist Irish Volunteers Hallmarked 1936 Silver Cloak Badge

irish-volunteers-silver-cloak-badge-1

A super rare Nationalist Irish Volunteers Hallmarked 1936 Silver Cloak Badge.  The Irish Volunteers  was a military organisation established in 1913 by Irish nationalists and was a direct response to the formation of the Ulster Volunteers in 1912.  Its declared primary aim was “to secure and maintain the rights and liberties common to the whole people of Ireland”.  The Volunteers included members of the Gaelic League, Ancient Order of Hibernians and Sinn Féin.  The Irish Volunteers fought for Irish independence in the 1916 Easter Rising, and were joined by the Irish Citizen Army, to eventually form the Irish Republican Army (IRA).

Solid silver hallmarked for Dublin, 1936

This badge is likely to have been carried by a former member of the Irish Volunteers and worn in commemoration of their service.  Is solid silver and comprises a well detailed Irish harp with the letters “I” and “V” to either side.  It has the original hallmarks that date it to 1936 (J & M Co., Dublin).  With a thick silver attachment chain.  Lovely piece.  Diameter of the badge is 1.5 inches.

Belgian Model 1916 Long-Bladed Bayonet and Scabbard

belgian-model-1916-bayonet-3

This is the Belgian Model 1916 Long-Bladed Bayonet and Scabbard that was manufactured for the Model 1889 Mauser Rifle and would have been carried by Belgian troops during WW1 and afterwards.  When Belgian was occupied by German forces in 1914, production of the rifle was moved to both France (Paris) England and America.  These bayonets were very much products of the shortages prevalent towards end of the First War and overall finish is simple and rough, particularly the blade – that is exactly how they were made.

Cruciform-type blade and tubular scabbard

With wooden slab grips attached by steel screws.  Cruciform-type blade with small oval manufacturing stamp to the forte.  Complete with steel tubular scabbard.  Blade length is 17.5 inches (22.5 inches overall).

US WW1 Model 1917 Winchester Bayonet and Scabbard

us-model-1917-winchester-bayonet-3

A very good US WW1 Model 1917 Winchester Bayonet and Scabbard.  The condition of the bayonet is exceptional and it retains all the original blueing to the hilt and bayonet mounts and importantly, the parkerising to the  blade.

Winchester bayonets far scarcer than Remingtons

These bayonets were also produced by Remington in much larger quantities and it is far harder to locate a Winchester example.  The blade forte is stamped with the date of 1917 and the Winchester “W” within an oval.  To the reverse is a US Army Ordnance mark of a flaming grenade, “US” and sold out of service (?) X mark.  Many of these bayonets found their way over to Britain during  WW2 where they were carried by the Home Guard – this might be one of them.  The bayonet comes complete with a black leather scabbard.  Blade length is 17 inches (22 inches overall).

German 17th Century Executioner’s Beheading Sword

 executioners-sword-2

An original and very rare German 17th Century Executioner’s Beheading Sword.  These swords were designed primarily to decapitate criminals and would have been wielded with two hands.  The use of a sword designed specifically for executions became more prominent in the 16th Century.  Previously, decapitations would have utilised a regular longsword. The heyday of the beheading sword was the 17th Century and they were widely used throughout Europe, most notably, Germany.  Interestingly, England tended to stick with the axe the weapon of choice for executioners.  This sword is an excellent example with the typical double-sided and wide blade.

Blade engraved with symbolic designs

It is engraved with symbolic designs, including a gallows and orb of justice.  There is also the running wolf mark of Passau, Solingen, indicating a German-made blade.  The hilt is interesting and comprises short, twisted quillons with rounded finials and a very unusual pommel fashioned from a stylised Turk’s head.  The use of a Turk’s head was quite common at this time, especially when taking into account the perceived and actual danger from the Ottoman Empire.  At the end of the blade is a short run of teeth which I assume would have been used to saw off any “dangly bits” that hadn’t been taken off by the swing of the executioner’s blade!  The ribbed wooden grip looks to be original and in fine shape.  Blade length is 34 inches (42 inches overall).  These swords are exceptionally rare and expensive in the market – this example is priced well under the normal market price and would make an excellent investment.
