Pair of Antique 19th Century Polychrome Teracotta Nubian Figures

antique-nubian-polychrome-figures-1

Excellent pair of Antique 19th Century Polychrome Teracotta Nubian Figures.  These handpainted figures were produced at the end of the 19th Century and into the early part of the 20th Century.  They are normally described as Nubian or exotic African figures although to my eye these look more like North African or Arabic – I think that the term “Nubian” was a generic term for all African figures at that time.

Both figures represented as water carriers

The pair of figures are represented as water carriers and each one has been painted in great detail, with close attention paid to their traditional costumes.  They both stand on idealised plinths.  Condition of the figures is very good for their age although I would suspect that they have probably undergone some restoration during their lifetimes as is normal with this fragile material.  Due to their large size, they would both make impressive display figures.  Height of each figure is 27 inches.  Due to their considerable weight and size, appropriate shipping charges have been applied although you are most welcome to collect!

Scottish C.1900’s Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Skean Dubh Dagger

scottish-military-skean-dhu-3

scottish-1828-pattern-broadsword-IMAGE

An original Scottish C.1900’s Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Skean Dubh Dagger.  These military dress daggers were normally kept in the officer’s sock and tended to be worn in conjunction with a matching regimental dirk at the belt.  This is a military skean dubh style that was common in Scottish infantry regiments during the late-19th and early 20th Century.  The skean dubh became particularly popular with Scottish military regiments in the British Army during the 19th Century, especially after the Scottish Revivalism period in the early to mid-19th Century.  They are still worn by Scottish Highland officers in the British Army to this day.  With typical chequered bogwood grip and white metal regimental motif to the grip.  The hilt mounts are formed into a distinctive geometric pattern with a large pommel button.

White metal decorative mounts to skean dubh

White metal mounts to hilt and leather scabbard.  The blade with single fuller and grooved spine.  Blade with some age wear – is good to find this skean dubh with its original scabbard as many were lost over time.  Blade length is 3.75 inches (7.25 inches overall).

English C.1770 Naval Officer’s Hanger Sword

english-1770-naval-hanger-cutlass-2

A very good example of a English C.1770 Naval Officer’s Hanger Sword.  This is the type of short hanger popular with English naval officers at the end of the 18th Century and comprises a staghorn grip, brass pommel and brass slotted hilt.

Distinctive slotted hilt

The slotted hilt was a common sword hilt style at this time and you also see them on English infantry swords of the period.  The blade is typically plain and double-edged.  Condition of the sword is excellent – is in remarkable condition for its great age.  Blade length is 22 inches (27 inches overall).

British Napoleonic Light Cavalry Trooper’s Sword

british-napoleonic-cavalry-troopers-sword-2

A non-regulation British Napoleonic Light Cavalry Trooper’s Sword.  Of a style similar to the 1788 Pattern Light Cavalry Trooper’s Sword but with an unusual ribbed horn grip.  The hilt has brass mounts including a plain backstrap and double langet.  This style of “hussar” sword was also carried by a number of a nations during the Napoleonic Wars, including France, German states and North and Eastern European countries.

Double-fullered blade

Blade is plain, double-fullered and typical of a trooper’s sword from this period.  It is also double-edged towards the point.  Condition of the sword is good for its age – the blade has dark age patina with some light pitting and both hilt and blade are rock solid – no movement.  No scabbard. Blade length is 32 inches (38 inches overall).

German North European Napoleonic Heavy Cavalry Officer’s Sword

napoleonic-cavalry-officers-sword-2

A very good and scarce German North European Napoleonic Heavy Cavalry Officer’s Sword.  This is a fine example of a late-18th and early 19th Century cavalry officer’s sword with brass, three-bar hilt and grip wrapped in black leather and bound with copper twistwire.  The hilt style is reminiscent of contemporary French cavalry swords but I believe that this sword is probably German or North European in origin.  The blade is etched with a rampant lion within a shield and royal crown to top.  This motif is similar to Bavarian royal motifs so this is a distinct possibility.

Blade is etched with stands of trophies and foliage.

The blade is also etched with stands of trophies and foliage.  Condition of the sword is excellent, especially the grip.   Both blade and hilt are rock solid no movement.  Outstanding piece.  No scabbard.  Blade length is 34 inches (39 inches overall).

English C.1770 Infantry Officer’s Sword and Scabbard

english-1770-infantry-officers-sword-3

A rarely encountered English C.1770 Infantry Officer’s Sword and Scabbard.  It is virtually unheard of to find these swords with their original leather and brass mounted scabbards due to their inherent fragility – most will have been lost over the last 250 years and it is a bonus to have the two together and in good shape.  This sword is of a type that was very common during the latter half of the 18th Century, particularly the American Revolutionary War.

Brass boat shell hilt and pas de ane

Comprises brass boat shell hilt with double quillons and pas de ane.  The grip is bound with its original copper twistwire and banding.  Pommel is of typical period ovoid form.  The blade is blade and double-edged with a central median ridge.  The scabbard is made from stitched leather (original stitching) and has a large brass locket and incised brass chape.  There is a repair below the locket but apart from that the scabbard is in remarkable shape for its age.  Blade length is 30 inches (37 inches overall).

French Napoleonic Hussar Officer’s Cavalry Sword

french-napoleonic-hussars-sword-3

A good and scarce example of a French Napoleonic Hussar Officer’s Cavalry Sword.  This is a complete sword with typical hussar-type brass stirrup hilt.  It appears to be bound with thick wire – was probably originally copper that has now been painted over with black paint – could be removed.  The blade is in excellent shape and comprises attractive blue and gilt decoration including stands of trophies, foliage and geometric lozenges.

Complete with original iron and brass mounted scabbard

The sword comes complete with a black painted brass and iron mounted scabbard.  It is rare to find these French Napoleonic hussar officers’ swords complete with their original scabbards.  Overall condition is very good for its age – throat mount missing.  Blade length is 32.5 inches (38 inches overall).

North African 19th Century Flyssa Sword and Dagger

north-african-flyssa-sword-and-dagger-3

A scarce and early North African 19th Century Flyssa Sword and Dagger.  These very distinctive swords are particularly associated with tribes in Algeria and comprises a long steel blade inlaid with brass inserts.  The spine of the blade is also deeply inlaid with brass decoration.  The hilt has an animal-head brass pommel with inlaid brass motifs to the grip.  The blade has a slightly curved, yataghan-type profile.

Complete with matching dagger

The sword also comes complete with a matching brass and steel-bladed dagger.  Condition of both sword and dagger is good for its age, with some consequent wear to both pieces that is usually found with these antique Flyssas.  Blade length for the sword is 29 inches (33.5 inches overall) and the dimensions of the dagger has a blade length of 10 inches (15 inches overall).

English 18th/19th Century Silver Mounted Knife and Scabbard

english-silver-staghorn-knife-3

An interesting English 18th/19th Century Silver Mounted Knife and Scabbard.  This is a fine combination of a silver and staghorn mounted hilt with clip-pointed blade.  The knife comes complete with an attractive tooled leather scabbard.  The hilt is from the early 18th Century and of a type associated with English hunting hangers of the period.

Early Victorian blade

The blade is early Victorian and is maker marked to W.T. Wigg and Sons of Sheffield, England.  The scabbard is typical of the eighteenth century and is seen on swords of the period.  Because of their inherent fragility, very few survive.  Blade with patches of pitting.  Blade length is 14.5 inches (19 inches overall).

French 19th Century Tricolour Military Spirit Barrel

french-military-spirit-barrel-1

Highly unusual French 19th Century Tricolour Military Spirit Barrel.  It probably held brandy or a spirit and was issued to troops in the field and carried whilst they were on campaign.  The barrel is in excellent condition with iron coopered hoops bound around the barrel.  The barrel has also been painted in the national colours of France and all the paintwork is original.

Few examples have survived

Retains original stopper and wooden tap – also the metal carrying loops to each end.  Great piece – very few of these items have survived due to their fragility.  The barrel measures 7 inches in length and 4.5 inches in diameter.  Would make a great display piece for a collector of French militaria.

English C.1770 Infantry Officer’s Sword

english-1760-military-officers-sword-2

A very fine and scarce English C.1770 Infantry Officer’s Sword from the late-18th Century.  This sword has a very elegant hilt design with am oval gadrooned pommel and prominent tang button.  The incised hilt guard is of boat shell type with swollen quillon.  There are a couple of similar examples (including an American silver-hilted version) featured in George C. Neumann’s, Swords and Blades of the American Revolution, pages 132 and 135.

Sword grip with copper bands and twistwire

The grip is made up of copper bands and twistwire and the knucklebow is slightly swollen and of D-Guard profile.  The plain blade has a raised median ridge and is deeply engraved with the letters, “R + L”.  I would assume that this probably refers to the maker.  Condition of the sword is excellent, especially the hilt and the blade has some consequent age wear.  Blade length is 32 inches (38.5 inches overall).

German European 19th Century Cuirassier Officer’s Sword

cuirassier-officers-sword-2

A scarce German European 19th Century Cuirassier Officer’s Sword with distinctive canted brass pommel particularly associated with German and Russian cuirassier swords of the period.  Cannot be certain of the exact country of origin but know that Germany favoured this hilt style for their cuirassier officers and they carried these swords during the 19th an early 20th centuries.  The grip is bound with leather and copper twistwire.

Sword blade with “CAST STEEL” stamped to the forte

The blade is quite interesting as it has a deeply impressed mark – “CAST STEEL” near to the blade forte.  Would be surprised if this is a British made blade but the term might be generic as in the case of Eisenhauer on German swords, signifying a quality blade.  This blade is double-fullered and with a clip point.  There is no scabbard.  Condition of the sword is good with a dark patina to the blade.  Blade length is 33 inches (39 inches overall).

British 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Officer’s Sword

british-1796-pattern-light-cavalry-officers-sword-2

A very good example of a British 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Officer’s Sword of a type carried by British mounted troops throughout the Napoleonic Wars.  This is the classic steel stirrup-hilted, light cavalry sword made famous by Major Gaspar Le Marchant of the British Army, who was the force behind its introduction in 1796.  It comprises a leather and silver twistwire grip in excellent condition (rarely encountered) and an etched, hatchet point blade.

Etching on blade includes royal coat of arms and “GR” cypher

The etching, now faded, includes the British royal coat of arms, royal “GR” cypher for King George II and scrolling foliage.  Blade in sound condition.  No scabbard but if you can find one, then you have a fine and complete British Napoleonic officer’s sword.   Blade length is 32 inches (38.5 inches overall).

US WW2 True Temper Military Machete and Scabbard

us-ww2-miitary-machete-3

A good example of a US WW2 True Temper Military Machete and Scabbard.  With distinctive black composite riveted grip.  The blade is deeply stamped with the following words – “True Temper TT 18 B 1943” and a “US” to the side.  It retains much of the original blueing to the blade and comes complete with its original and scarce brown leather scabbard.  These swords were issued to regular US Army soldiers and also US Navy Marines and were used throughout the fighting in the Pacific War.

Early WW2 leather scabbard

Most scabbards encountered in the market tend to be made from canvas or some kind of composite material so I would guess that this is an early war example.  Leather scabbard with some scored numbering – soldier’s number?  Blade length is 18 inches (23  inches overall).

Irish Nationalist 1916 Easter Rising Veteran’s 1935 Armband

irish-1916-easter-rising-armband-1

An original and super rare Irish Nationalist 1916 Easter Rising veteran’s 1935 armband.  It  was the first official “decoration” given to veterans of the 1916 Rebellion and was awarded at a ceremony held at the Rotunda Rink, Dublin, on Sunday 21 April 1935 to mark the 19th Anniversary of the Rebellion. This armband was worn by Volunteer veterans with their civilian attire on special ceremonial occasions, prior to the introduction of the famous 1916 Active Service Medal.

Very few Irish 1916 Easter Rising armbands in existence

As there were only 2,439 1916 Active Service Medals issued and these are extremely rare and valuable (also currently copied) to the collector, the number of these armbands in existence has got to be quite small – very few will have survived over the years – especially so in this excellent condition.  Cannot be faulted.  Dimensions are 7.5 inches x 4.5 inches.

British WW2 Wilkinson 3rd Pattern Commando Dagger

british-wilkinson-3rd-pattern-commando-knife-3

An extremely rare British WW2 Wilkinson 3rd Pattern Commando Dagger.  Although the 3rd pattern is not uncommon, very few are found with a maker’s name of Wilkinson to the blade forte.  With ribbed zinc-alloy grip.  This was the final pattern of British commando knives and was introduced partly as a result of economies towards the end of the war (1943-1945).  The ribbed grip was also a good design improvement as it allowed better grip and purchase when holding in the hand.

Wilkinson maker’s name to blade forte

The double-edged blade has the  remains of a Wilkinson maker’s name to the forte.  In good overall condition – most original blueing remains to the crossguard and scabbard chape – elasticated band a little loose.  Blade length is 7 inches (11.5 inches overall).

British WW2 Royal Air Force Officer’s Leather Gauntlets

 british-ww2-raf-officers-gauntlets-1

A very fine and original British WW2 Royal Air Force Officer’s Leather Gauntlets.  This is the 1941 pattern.  Zip fastener openings in full working order – these enabled the pilot to easily open and access his gloves.    They were intended to be worn over silk or rayon glove liners.  With Air Ministry stamps to inside of each gauntlet – the interior is stamped “AM” under crown, serial number and size – 9 and a half.  Condition is very good with only light service wear – the leather is still supple and with a good tan colour.

Royal Air Force Gauntlets currently being copied

This is a nice complete pair and rarely found in this complete condition. These leather gauntlets are currently being copied and original examples are extremely rare.
