British Victorian 1845 Pattern Naval Officer’s Sword

british-1845-pattern-naval-sword-3

British Victorian 1845 Pattern Naval Officer’s Sword

This is a very unusual sword as the hilt style is of British Army regulation pattern, as is the blade. but the blade is etched with a fouled anchor.  It is obviously for carrying by a “naval” officer and it is likely that this was for an officer of the Royal Dockyard Battalion (who protected British military coastal ports and installations) or it could be for an officer in the Royal Marines.  Either way, it is a seldom encountered piece.  The hilt and blade is of standard 1845 type and consists of a gilt brass Gothic hilt and grip wrapped in fishskin and bound with brass twistwire.  The blade is decorated with a fouled anchor and crown, VR cypher and scrolling foliage.  Retailer marked to the blade forte – John Adams and Son, opposite Royal Hotel, Devonport.  Complete with leather and plated steel mounted scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

In very good condition overall – nice clean blade.

Blade length is 31 inches (37 inches overall).

British C.WW1 1897 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Sword

british-ww1-1897-pattern-infantry-sword-3

British C.WW1 1897 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Sword

An original British Army military officer’s sword from the First War.  This is an unusual example as it features an exaggerated “dumb-bell” type hilt.  The hilt has the crown and royal cypher of King George V.  It was retailed by the little known military outfitters, Studd and Millington of West London.  The grip is bound with leather and copper twistwire.  The blade is of standard pattern and features a number of etched motifs including royal cypher and scrolling foliage.  Complete with leather field service scabbard and frog.

Condition of the Sword

In good overall condition.  Some service wear to the grip and scabbard.

Model 1927 Vickers Irish Army Military Helmet

irish-republic-steel-helmet-4

Irish Army Model 1927 Vickers Military Helmet

This is a scarce and rarely encountered 1920’s Irish Army military helmet.  The helmet is based on the WW1 German military helmet but was actually made in Northern Ireland by the British firm of Vickers.  They were of rather poor construction when compared to the German helmets and suffered from a much thinner gauge of metal.  Because of this most existing helmets are dented in some way.  They were originally painted olive green but repainted white for civil defence use during WW2.  This is the finish that remains on this helmet.  Most of these helmets were destroyed in the 1970’s when they were used as hard core during the construction of an Irish Army barracks.  Complete with its original liner.  Am currently selling another similar example.

Condition of the Helmet

In worn condition – looks to have been in storage for a long time.

British Napoleonic 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Trooper’s Sword

british-1796-cavalry-sword-3

An original example British Napoleonic 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Trooper’s Sword.  This British Napoleonic military sword was carried by British light cavalry troopers throughout the Napoleonic Wars.  It had a long service life and was still being issued to native Indian troopers well into the latter stages of the Nineteenth Century.  Although many were produced, it is now becoming a scarce British military sword to locate.  Of standard type with stirrup hilt, ribbed wooden grip and shield langets – the grip would originally have been covered with leather.

Spear-point blade and iron scabbard

With wide and large and unusual upturned, spear point blade.  Complete with iron scabbard.  Original leather covering missing to the grip – losses to wood – some age wear damage to the scabbard.  Blade length is 32.5 inches (37 inches overall).

French Napoleonic Heavy Cuirassier Trooper’s Sword

french-early-cuirassier-sword-3

French Napoleonic Heavy Cuirassier Trooper’s Sword.  An unusual and very early example of this iconic Napoleonic sword that was carried by elite French cavalry cuirassiers.  Most examples encountered are dated and maker marked to the spine of the blade but this sword dates from the early 1800’s before this practice became standard.  It also has a clipped point to the blade only seen on early examples as opposed to the more common spear-pointed blades of later swords.

Brass four-bar hilt

The large hilt is of brass, four-bar construction and the grip is wrapped in leather.  The blade is multi-fullered.  The hilt has numerous markings including a Versailles maker mark.  In good overall condition – grip lacking twistwire – easily replaced.  Light pitting to blade.  Blade length is 38 inches (45 inches overall).

German 19th Century Military Officer’s Sword

german-19th-century-sword-3

An interesting example of a German 19th Century Military Officer’s Sword.  An unusual and scarce German military sword that dates from the mid-late 19th Century and is reminiscent of British Army officers’ swords of the period.  It is marked with a crown and letter C to the hilt and scabbard.  I would assume that it relates to a particular ruling monarch within a German state pre-1871 re-unification.

British Gothic style sword hilt

The hilt is of British Gothic style and the grip is made from ribbed horn.  The blade is plain and with the scales motif of the German sword making firm of Alcoso (Alexander Coppel) to the blade forte.  Comes complete with its original steel scabbard.  Am wondering whether this is possibly an NCO’s sword due to the official inspection stamps mentioned earlier.  Certainly an interesting piece.  In good overall condition – some wear to the end of the blade.  Blade length is 32 inches (38 inches overall).
