C.1900’s Gurkha Kukri and Scabbard

gurkha-1900-leather-kukri-3

free-shipping-1

An original C.1900’s Gurkha Kukri and Scabbard of good quality.  With carved horn grip, brass pommel and brass tang button.  The blade is decorated near the spine with deeply incised patterns of lines and notches.  The kukri is a Nepalese knife that exhibits an inwardly curved edge and is used as both a tool and a weapon.  It is regarded as a basic utility knife of the Nepalese people and is the primary edged weapon of the Nepalese Army, the Royal Gurkha Rifles and of all Gurkha regiments throughout the world.  There are many famous tales of Gurkha soldiers using the kukri as their primary weapon of choice when in close combat.

Well tempered blade on Gurkha Kukri

The blade is well tempered and the kukri comes complete with its original decorated tooled leather scabbard and one by-knife. The scabbard is one of the best features of this kukri as it exhibits considerable detail and workmanship.  The kukri is in good condition throughout commensurate with its age.  A nice and original addition to a collection of antique Gurkha kukris.  Blade length is 12 inches (17 inches overall).

British Napoleonic Heavy Cavalry Officer’s Sword to the Lifeguards

1796-lifeguards-officers-sword-2

A good and fine example of a British Napoleonic Heavy Cavalry Officer’s Sword to the Lifeguards, an elite British cavalry regiment that still guards the monarch to this day and provides ceremonial duties, most notably at Buckingham Palace and other royal palaces.  This is a good example of a British Napoleonic 1796 Pattern Heavy Cavalry Officer’s Sword of a type associated with officers who served in the famous Life Guards regiments.  These regiments comprised the 1st and 2nd Lifeguards.  There are a number of variants to this sword and the differences are normally associated with the pommel tang button (either flattened or tubular) and the quillons – some have a scallop shell to the guard or none may be present.  In this case, the “scallop” is of open-ring form.  The D-shaped knuckleguard is also secured to the pommel by means of a brass screw.

British Napoleonic Heavy Cavalry Officer’s Sword to the Lifeguards – boat shell hilt

This Napoleonic Lifeguards officer’s sword has a very distinctive boat shell hilt and the grip is covered in sheet silver made to give the appearance of wrapped silver twistwire.  This is a common feature on officers’ swords of the period and we also see it used on the grips of British Napoleonic infantry officers’ swords.  The blade is single-fullered to half of the blade and typically plain – very few if any that I have encountered have been decorated.  It has some appropriate age wear.  In very good condition overall – some age and service damage to the sheet silver grip.  Blade length is 32 inches (38 inches overall).  No scabbard – interestingly, these swords are hardly ever seen with their original leather and brass mounted scabbards – assume that they have perished over time.

British Army 19th Century Royal Scots Fusiliers Officer’s Sword

royal-scots-fusiliers-sword-3

British Army 19th Century Royal Scots Fusiliers Officer’s Sword.  An extremely rare British sword.  This type of sword was only carried by the Royal Scots Fusiliers and only for a very limited amount of time.  According to Robson (Swords of the British Army, page 182), it was carried from the 1860’s through to 1881 when the regiment adopted the basket hilt.  Interestingly, this example has the early 1822 Pattern pipe back blade and I would guess that it actually pre-dates the 1860’s so it is possible that the regiment were carrying these swords earlier than first thought.

Sword hilt with Royal Scots Fusiliers motif

The hilt is very distinctive and comprises an inset regimental device, the number “21” and the regimental motto, Nemo meimune lacessit.  The pommel and backstrap are heavily decorated with thistles.  The grip is wrapped with fishskin and bound with steel twistwire.  The pipe back blade has the remains of an engraved regimental scroll and flaming grenade motif. The sword comes complete with its original brass and leather mounted scabbard.  Despite its condition this is a very rare and seldom seen sword and only a handful would have survived.  In generally fair condition – some loss of fishskin to the grip and blade is worn in places.  Blade length is 33 inches (38 inches overall).

British 19th Century Named Wilkinson 18th Hussars Cavalry Officer’s Sword

british-18th-hussars-officers-sword-3

A fine British 19th Century Named Wilkinson 18th Hussars Cavalry Officer’s Sword.  A good example of a named Wilkinson Sword 1821 Pattern Cavalry Officer’s Sword for an officer in the 18th Hussars. This is the sword of Lieutenant George Birch and was purchased from Wilkinson in 1886.  He was born in 1864 and made lieutenant in 1885 and Captain (1890).  His promotion was noted in the London Gazette – see images below.  Have not researched his service history.  The sword is of standard 1821 Pattern Light Cavalry type and comprises a steel, three-bar hilt and the grip is wrapped in fishskin with silver twistwire.

Sword blade with 18th Hussars regimental badge

The blade is of exceptional quality and featires the regimental badge of the 18th Hussars, royal crown (VR), cypher and scrolling foliage.  Comes complete with its original steel scabbard.  In good overall condition – little wear to the grip.  Blade is very clean and crisp.  Blade length is 35 inches (41 inches overall).

English Late-17th Century Naval Hanger Sword

english-17th-century-naval-hanger-sword-3

English Late-17th Century Naval Hanger Sword

This is a truly unusual and possibly unique sword that is quite intriguing and of extremely early date. It is of relatively small proportions and likely that it was carried as a form of short sword or large dirk type weapon.  I have given it a naval attribution as its style is reminiscent of very early naval hanger type cutlasses.  The blade is very interesting and bears two deeply stamped marks of a crown with the letter “C” underneath.  This style designation is seen in coinage of the period that was minted during the reign of King Charles II (1630-1685) and I am pretty certain that the blade is therefore of military issue.  It is flat-backed and curved and attached to a simple iron hilt with a staghorn grip.  From looking at the pommel we can see that both blade and hilt have been together for a considerable period of  time and likely to be original to eachother and both dating from the end of the 17th Century.  The sword comes with an iron scabbard.  This is one of the earliest examples of this sword type that I have ever come across.

Condition of the Sword

In good overall condition for its great age with appropriate age wear to blade and hilt.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 17.5 inches (20.5 inches overall).

Scottish Jacobite C.1700’s Highlander’s Fighting Dirk

scottish-1700-highland-fighting-dirk-2

scottish-1828-pattern-broadsword-IMAGE

Scottish Jacobite C.1700’s Highlander’s Fighting Dirk

An original and unique Scottish Jacobite early 18th Century Highlander’s fighting dirk.  This is a teriffic weapon and perfectly designed for use with the Highland targe (shield).  It fits perfectly into the palm of the hand and would have been hidden behind the targe and used as a lethal stabbing weapon during combat.  The grip is made from a large animal bone (probably Highland cattle) and the blade is made from a Scottish Highland broadsword blade – dirks of this early period were commonly made from broken old broadsword blades.  What gives it away as a Scottish Jacobite dirk is the distinctive pommel nut that is seen on many Scottish dirks of this period.  Have added a couple of pics of similar pommels from Scottish dirks that I have sold previously – see below.  A great piece.

Condition of the Dirk

In excellent shape with dark and smooth age patina to the blade.

Specifications of the Dirk

Blade length is 12 inches (16 inches overall).

Ottoman Turkish C.1890’s Senior Infantry Officer’s Sword

ottoman-turkish-officers-sword-3

Terrific and impressive Ottoman Turkish C.1890’s Senior Infantry Officer’s Sword

This sword is one of the best examples of an Ottoman Turkish army officer’s sword that I have encountered in a long time.  It is of very large proportions and similar in style to Imperial German military officers’ swords of the period and it is likely that it was made in Germany.  There letters A and C are to be found under the blade near the forte and these might represent the sword making company, Alex Coppel.  The lionshead hilt is very detailed and includes two ruby glass eyes to the pommel.  The grip is bound in fishskin.  The blade is extensively decorated and includes Turkish crescent and moon, war trophies, stands of arms and foliage. It comes complete with a heavy steel scabbard.  This is a most impressive sword in the hand and would have been carried by a very senior officer, probably of General rank.

Condition of the Sword

In good overall condition – a little wear to the grip and scabbard – blade is clean.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 32.5 inches (39 inches overall).

This is a seldom seen example of a dated 1911 1897 Pattern Infantry NCO’s Sword carried by a soldier in the Grenadier Guards just prior to WW1.  It was made at the Royal Enfield arms factory in London and comprises a nickel plated hilt and blade.  Interestingly, the hilt retains the VR (Victoria) cypher and the blade is dated to 1911 – this could have been an economy measure.  The grip is wrapped in fishskin and bound with silver twistwire.  The blade is regimentally stamped to the Grenadier Guards (GG) on the inner side of the guard.  The are also numerous issue marks to the blades fortes.  Comes complete with leather field service scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

In excellent condition – blade retains all original nickel plated finish.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 32.5 inches (39 inches overall).
