African Malawi 1897 Pattern Army Officer’s Wilkinson Sword

malawi-army-officers-wilkinson-sword-3

A rare African Malawi 1897 Pattern Army Officer’s Wilkinson Sword

This sword is quite rare and would have been carried by an officer in the Malawi Army.  The country gained independence in 1964 and it is believed that the government placed an order with Wilkinson Sword t supply the officers in their armed forces with ceremonial swords.  This sword probably dates from the 1960’s/’70’s.  It follows exactly the form of the British Infantry Officer’s 1897 Pattern sword except that the state coat of arms of Malawi have been etched onto the sword hilt.  The blade is extensively decorated with Malawian state motifs.  The sword comes complete with its original field service scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

In exceptional condition – virtually unusued – blade is absolutely mint.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 32.5 inches (38 inches overall).

German C.WW2 Army Officer’s Sword

german-ww2-army-officers-sword-3

A good example of a German C.WW2 Army Officer’s Sword

This sword would have been carried by an officer in the German Army from the 1930’s through to the end of WW2.  It is of good quality so I would guess that it is either early or pre-War.  It has an elaborately decorated hilt and a celluloid grip bound with silver twistwire.  The blade is plain and nickel plated with an impressed maker’s mark of the Eickhorn sword making company of Solingen, Germany.  It is interesting to note that this sword does not have an inset eagle and swastika to the hilt langet as is quite common with these swords.  Not sure why this is so although it might have been a personal decision of the owner.  Comes complete with its original black painted scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

In good overall condition with a little wear to the hilt and some loss of paint to the black scabbard.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 34.5 inches (39 inches overall).

French Late-19th Century Cavalry Officer’s Sword

french-19th-century-cavalry-officers-sword-2

A good example of a French Late-19th Century Cavalry Officer’s Sword. This is a French cavalry officer’s sword dating from the latter end of the 19th Century.  With brass, four-bar hilt and horn grip wrapped with brass twistwire. The plain, straight blade is engraved to a Klingenthal maker on the spine.  There is also the owner’s monogram inlaid in silver to the back of the pommel strap.   The use of monograms to French military swords in the 19th Century became very popular and some also feature family coat of arms.  This sword has a crown above the owner’s initials and it is likely that he was a member of the French aristocracy.

Maker’s name to the bowl guard of French Late-19th Century Cavalry Officer’s Sword

There is a maker’s name stamped to the upper side of the bowl guard.  No scabbard.  In very good shape overall – some sharpening marks along blade edge.  Blade length is 36 inches (43 inches overall).

Javanese 1900’s Kris Dagger and Scabbard

kris-dagger-antique-3

A good example of a Javanese 1900’s Kris Dagger and Scabbard.  Comes complete with a fine, hand decorated brass scabbard and polished hardwood mounts.  In good overall condition for its age.  The distinctive wavy blade (indicative of Kris’s) has been produced with typical forged layering and the carved hardwood grip is particularly intricate with designs of foliage and abstract shapes.  This is an indicator of good quality and the kris is showing definite age and so I would date this example from the early-mid 20th Century.

Blade layering

The production of a kris blade includes a process of layering and forging that would have added considerable extra strength to the blade.  It is a process of blade making that has been undertaken for many centuries throughout the world and I many cultures, from the Vikings through to the Japanese Samurai sword makers.  Blade length is 13.5 inches (17 inches overall).  This would make a fine addition to a collection of antique kris daggers and displays particularly well.

British 19th Century Orkney Artillery Volunteers Officer’s Sword

british-orkney-artillery-volunteers-sword-3

A rare British 19th Century Orkney Artillery Volunteers Officer’s Sword

This sword was carried by an officer in the Orkney Artillery Volunteers during the 19th Century – probably c.1860’s.  This far flung string of Scottish islands (around 10 miles north of Caithness) probably had quite a small military contingent so this sword must be pretty rare.  The sword has a typical artillery pattern three-bar hilt with fishskin and brass twiswire to the grip.  The blade is etched with a regimental designation, including “Orkney Artillery Volunteers” and “Staff 1st Administrative Brigade”, artillery cannon, royal crown and cypher and scrolling foliage.

Condition of the Sword

In fair condition – wear to hilt and blade – some edge nicks.  Scabbard is has nickel-plated mounts – probably associated although a good fit with no movement.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 31.75 inches (38 inches overall).

British 1897 Pattern Army Sword with earlier Cavalry Blade – Wilkinson

british-1897-pattern-wilkinson-2535-sword-3

A highly unusual and unique British 1897 Pattern Army Sword with earlier Cavalry Blade – Wilkinson

This is a fascinating sword and of a type that I have not encountered before.  It comprises an 1897 Pattern Infantry Officer’s hilt (from the reign of King George V) for service in India and is combined with a terrific and wide, cavalry fighting blade by Wilkinson Sword (serial number dating it to 1883 – owner unknown).  The blade is designed for combat and the owner must have intended to use it in the field. Is possibly a family blade that was kept by its owner through to the next two monarchs (Edward VII and George V).  The hilt is nickel-plated with a grip bound with leather and copper twistwire and comes complete with original scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

In superb condition – blade is virtually mint.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 34.5 inches (41 inches overall).
