English C.1750 Infantryman’s Military Hanger Sword

english-1750-military-hanger-sword-2

English C.1750 Infantryman’s Military Hanger Sword

This is a rare English mid-18th Century infantryman’s hanger that would have been issued to regular troops.  It is sometimes thought that this style of hanger was only intended for hunting use but this is not true as these hangers were purchased by regimental colonels who then issued them to their troops.  This is definitely a military hanger as evidenced by the fact that the blade is deeply stamped with a GR royal cypher and crown, indicating military rather than civilian issue.  The hilt comprises a fluted brass shell guard and D-guard knucklebow.  The grip is of simple, wooden tubular profile.  The pommel is oval with prominent raised tang button.  The blade is single-fullered and curved towards the point.  An almost identical example can be see in George Neumann’s Swords and Blades of the American Revolution – see images below.  These hangers were commonly carried by British soldiers throughout the American Revolutionary War.

Condition of the Hanger Sword

In very good condition for its age with some wear to the blade commensurate with its age.

Specifications of the Hanger Sword

Blade length is 23.75 inches (28 inches overall).

English C.1690 Hunting/Naval Officer’s Sword

english-1690-hunting-hanger-2

English C.1690 Hunting/Naval Officer’s Sword

A fine and unusual example of a late-17th Century English short sword that is of a type carried by both huntsmen and naval officers.  It comprises a brass mounted hilt with typical staghorn grip.  The pommel is decorated with cherubic faces, the motif being continued to the shell guard that features a winged cherub.  What makes this sword quite unusual is the use of a covering of silver to the shell guard –  both on top and to the underside.  Have not seen this before but it is clear that it was done when the sword was originally manufactured and is not a later addition.  The blade is un-fullered and slightly curved and includes two deeply stamped King’s Head maker marks.  These are normally attributed to the Wundes sword making family of Solingen, Germany who were prolific throughout the 17th and 18th Century.  These hangers were particularly favoured by English naval officers of the late-17th and early 18th Century as the shorter blades meant that they could be used on board a crowded ship’s deck.  Contemporary portraits show them being carried by English naval officers – see image below.

Condition of the Sword

In good condition for its age with some commensurate wear to the blade.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 22 inches (27.5 inches overall).

British C.1820 Georgian Military Bandsman’s Sword

british-1820-bandsword-3

British C.1820 Georgian Military Bandsman’s Sword

A rarely encountered early 19th Century British military bandsman’s sword complete with its original brass and velvet mounted scabbard.  This is the first example with this type of scabbard that I ever come across in many years of dealing.  It is likely that most scabbards made with a velvet covering have long since perished so it is fortunate to find one still existing.  The sword has a very well detailed brass lionshead pommel and ribbed grip. It also has prominent double hilt langets.  The blade is plain, wide and single-fullered.

Condition of the Sword

In very good condition for its age – scabbard has some minor losses to the velvet and expected fading.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 27.5 inches (31.5 inches overall).

Spanish C.1650 Main Gauche Dagger

spanish-1600-main-gauche-dagger-2

Spanish C.1650 Main Gauche Dagger

An original and fine Spanish mid-17th Century Main Gauche Dagger in complete and unaltered form.  These distinctive weapons were used primarily in the duel and were carried in the left hand and used to parry a sword blade.  These Spanish duelling daggers had a prominent and large rolled guard that gave good protection to the hand and also comprised a deadly thrusting blade with needle point that would have been very effective during the thrust.  There are also a series of pronounced notches to the upper side of the blade edge that would have held an opponent’s sword blade.  This example has an unsually marked blade forte that includes the word ZERO in prominent letters.  Not sure of its meaning or significance but could be related to the maker or have symbolic status.  Note:  This is an original 17th Century Main Gauche and not a 19th Century or recent copy.

Condition of the Main Gauche

In remarkably fine condition for its great age – no damage or issues.

British 1897 Pattern Indian Army NCO’s Sword

british-1897-pattern-nco-sword-3

British 1897 Pattern Indian Army NCO’s Sword

A good, clean example of a British Army NCO’s sword issued to an NCO serving in India during the 1900’s.  This particular sword was issued in 1909 and is dated to both the sword hilt and the scabbard throat.  It is also stamped with the initials A.L. – cannot currently identify the regiment but is likely to be an Indian regiment as the sword hilt has the ERI (India) royal cypher.  Sword was made by Mole and Son of Birmingham, who were prolific suppliers of military swords to the British Army during this period.  It is also stamped with the initials – ISD – this stands for India Stores Department.  Hilt is bound with fishskin and steel twistwire.  Comes complete with its original and matching scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

In very good condition overall with extremely clean blade.

C.1590 North Italian Horseman’s War Hammer Axe

late-16th-century-war-hammer-2

C.1590 North Italian Horseman’s War Hammer Axe

An excellent and original late-16th Century North Italian war hammer in very fine condition.  These war hammers were meant for close combat, whilst on a horse or dismounted and on the field of battle.  This war hammer comprises a large and distinctive iron beak-head and claw-type hammer to the reverse.  The beak would have been used to pierce armour and the hammer would have smashed against the hard plate armour of the time.  Swords were ineffective against armour and so a penetrative or concussive weapon was required – most injuries from the hammer would have been caused by the concussive power of the hammer penetrating through the helmet and so rendering the opponent unconscious or disorientated.  It was quite a gruesome but effective weapon.  This hammer has riveted langets that reach the full length of the original wooden shaft.  It is exceptionally rare to find these very early war hammers and especially so in this superb condition – cannot be faulted.  Most examples of this quality are found in museums.  See the images below from publications that feature more examples of this type of weapon.

Condition of the War Hammer Axe

Excellent condition throughout and with great dark and smooth age patina to all the metal parts.

Specifications of the War Hammer Axe

Length of the hammer is 19.5 inches.

Sword of Colonel Daniel Mackinnon Coldstream Guards Waterloo Hougoumont

daniel-mackinnon-sword-4

Sword of Colonel Daniel Mackinnon, Coldstream Guards

This is the historically important sword of Colonel Daniel Mackinnon, Coldstream Guards (1791-1836), and hero of the defence of Hougoumont Farm during the battle of Waterloo.  Below is a 19th Century account of his extraordinary and illustrious career.  He is acknowledged as one of the most famous Scottish soldiers in the history of the British Army.  I suggest that you read this first to get an idea of the kind of hero of the British Army that we are dealing with here.

MACKINNON, COLONEL DANIEL.—This brave soldier, who acquired high military reputation in the Peninsular war and at Waterloo, was born in 1791, and was second son of William Mackinnon, chieftain of the ancient clan of that name in the Western Highlands of Scotland. This chieftainship, however, had dwindled into a mere lairdship, in consequence of the abolition of the patriarchal government in the Highlands, and Daniel, whose energies a century earlier might have been wasted in some petty feud or spreagh, was reserved to be one of the honoured heroes in a great European warfare. At the early age of fourteen he entered the army as ensign in the Coldstream Guards, and quickly won the esteem of his brother officers by his activity, cheerfulness, and kind disposition, which was further increased when he had an opportunity of showing his valour in the field. His first service, however, was nothing more than a little harmless marching and countermarching; for his regiment, which was ordered to Bremen in 1805, to co-operate with the Prussians and their allies, never came in sight of the enemy. After its return, the Coldstream in 1807 was sent with the armament against Copenhagen, where the land-service was not in requisition. Two years more elapsed of mere parade and warlike demonstration, which, however, was brought to an end when Mackinnon embarked with his regiment for the Peninsula in 1809, after he had attained the rank of lieutenant in the Guards.

The military life of an officer so young as Mackinnon, and holding his sub-ordinate rank, can be nothing else than a record of personal daring and hair-breadth escapes: he obeys the commands and fulfils the wishes of his superiors, through every difficulty and at whatever risk, and thus establishes his claim to be a commander in turn. Such was the case with the subject of this brief notice. He was appointed aide-de-camp to General Stopford, who commanded the Guards, and had thus an opportunity of distinguishing himself through the whole course of that terrible and eventful war from 1809 to 1814. And these opportunities were neither shunned nor neglected, so that the bivouac and the mess-table were enlivened with tales of his personal prowess and daring. On one occasion, his supreme contempt of danger partook of the ludicrous. While our army was passing a defile, and debouching from it, there was one spot in which part of the troops were exposed to a very heavy fire. But in this post of peculiar peril, Captain Mackinnon was found performing the duties of the toilet, and lathering and shaving his chin, as coolly as if he had been fifty miles from the scene of action. No sight was better calculated to animate dispirited soldiers; they rushed immediately to the onset, and drove the French before them. No wonder that the soldiers loved and were ready to follow an officer who, let the risk be what it might, was ready to encounter or abide his full share. But he was equally endeared to his brother officers, by his overflowing kindness and invincible good nature, so that, during the whole of these trying campaigns, in which patience was tempted to the uttermost, he never gave offence, or adopted a subject of quarrel. Some of these veterans still survive, by whom the amiable qualities of the gallant Celt are affectionately remembered.

After having taken part in every battle from Talavera to Toulouse, the peace of 1814 released Mackinnon from active military duty. It is pleasing also to add, that his services had been appreciated, for he was at once raised from the rank of captain to that of lieutenant-colonel in the Coldstream regiment. Relying upon the promise of a lasting peace, he returned to England, but was suddenly roused, like many of his brethren upon leave of absence, by the escape of Bonaparte from Elba, and the astounding events that followed in quick succession. Napoleon was once more upon the throne of France, and a fresh war was inevitable. Knowing this, Colonel Mackinnon hurried to Ramsgate to join his regiment, now quartered in Brussels, but not finding the expected vessel ready to sail, he threw himself, with another officer, into an open boat, and reached Ostend in time to join in the engagements of the 16th and 17th of June, and finally, in the great battle of Waterloo.

Of the many hundreds of episodes that constitute this great military assize of the nations, and out of which so many volumes of history and biography have been constructed, and amidst the mélée of wonderful charges and brave deeds that occurred every moment, and over every part of the field, we must limit our attention to a thousandth part of the great event, and attend exclusively to the movements of Mackinnon. Amidst the fire, he had three horses shot under him. In one of these volleys by which he was successively brought down, he was himself shot in the knee, his sword flew from his hand, and in falling, he alighted upon a prostrate French officer, who was wounded like himself. Mackinnon immediately took possession of the Frenchman’s sword, with an apology for using it, as he had lost his own, mounted a fresh horse, and continued to charge at the head of his regiment, until he was detached with 250 of his Coldstreams, and 1st regiment of Guards, for the defence of the farm of Hougoumont. This was the key of Wellington’s position, and Mackinnon was ordered to defend it to the last extremity. And well do the records of Waterloo testify how faithfully this command was obeyed. For a considerable period, the whole interest of the conflict was converged round this farm and its outhouses, the possession of which was of the utmost importance to Napoleon, so that mass after mass of French grenadiers was hurled against it in rapid succession, with golden promises to the first who entered; but as fast as they approached the walls, the close, steady fire from within tore their ranks into shreds, and strewed the ground with the dead and wounded; and as fast as they fell back, Mackinnon and his little band sallied from their defences, piled up the dead bodies in front of the doors as a rampart, and hurried back to their posts as soon as a fresh inundation of fire and steel came sweeping down upon them. Again and again was this manoeuvre successfully performed, but in the midst of imminent peril, by which the brave band of defenders was reduced to a handful. Still, the utmost efforts of Napoleon upon this point were defeated, and Hougoumont was saved. At last the farm-house was relieved, and Mackinnon with his party joined the British army, now assailants in their turn. But the wound which he had previously received in his knee from a musket-shot, and which he had disregarded during the whole of the action, now occasioned such pain, accompanied with loss of blood, that he fainted, and was carried off the field in a litter to Brussels, where he was treated with the utmost courtesy and kindness. The wound was healed, but the buoyant activity which had hitherto made exercise a necessary of life to him was broken. As for the sword, which he had appropriated to his own use at such a curious crisis, he not only fulfilled his promise, by using it gallantly in the defence of Hougoumont, and through the whole action, but ever afterwards wore it on field-days and parade, as a fair trophy of Waterloo.

Thus, at the early age of twenty-four, the military career of this intrepid soldier was closed by the return of universal peace—not, however, without a ten years’ service, and having won by his merits a rank which few soldiers so young are privileged to occupy. He still continued to hold his commission in the army; and a majority in the Coldstream having become vacant, he was induced to purchase it, by which he obtained the rank of a full colonel in the service, and the ultimate command of the regiment.

From the foregoing account, it could scarcely be expected that Colonel Mackinnon should also obtain distinction in authorship. Entering the army at the raw age of fourteen, when a stripling’s education is still imperfect, and returning to domestic life at a period when few are willing to resume their half-conned lessons, and become schoolboys anew, we are apt to ask, how and where he could have acquired those capacities that would enable him to produce a well-written book? But this, by no means the easiest or least glorious of his achievements, he has certainly accomplished. Soon after the accession of William IV., his majesty was desirous that a full history of the Coldstream Guards should be written, and he selected no other than the gallant colonel of the regiment to be its historian. Such a choice, and the able manner in which it was fulfilled, show that Mackinnon must have possessed higher qualities than those of a mere swordier however brave, and that he must have cultivated them with much careful application after his final return to England. For this, indeed, if nothing more than recreation had been his motive, there was an especial inducement, arising from his wound received at Waterloo, by which he was prevented from more active enjoyments. Although such a task required no small amount of historical and antiquarian research, the origin of the Coldstreams dating so far back as the year 1650, he ably discharged it by his work in two volumes, entitled “The Origin and Services of the Coldstream Guards,” published in 1833, and dedicated by permission to his Majesty. In this work he has traced the actions of this distinguished brigade in England and Scotland during the wars of the Commonwealth, Restoration, and Revolution; its services in Ireland, in Holland, and upon the continent; and finally in the Peninsula, and at Waterloo; and while he has shown a thorough acquaintanceship with the history of these various wars, his work is pervaded throughout not only with the high chivalrous magnanimity of a British soldier, but the exactness of a careful thinker, and the taste of a correct and eloquent writer.

The rest of Colonel Mackinnon’s life may be briefly summed up, as it was one of peace and domestic enjoyment. After he had settled in England, he married Miss Dent, the eldest daughter of Mr. Dent, M.P. for Pool, a young lady of great attractions, but who brought him no family. With her he led a happy and retired life, surrounded by the society of those who loved him; and cheered, as we may well think, by those studies which he turned to such an honourable account. It was thought that, from his strong robust frame and healthy constitution, he would have survived to a good old age; but the sedentary life to which his wound confined him, proved too much for a system so dependent upon active and exciting exercise. After having scarcely ever felt a day’s illness, he died at Hertford Street, May Fair, London, on the 22d of June, 1836, being only forty-six years old.

The sword is of 1822 Pattern Infantry officer’s levee type and would have been worn on social occasions such as regimental balls and dinners – I assume that Mackinnon, although retired from the Army by this time, retained an honorary rank and was no doubt entitled to still carry a sword.  The sword comprises a typical gilt brass Gothic hilt with VR (Victoria) royal cypher.  The officer’s name – Dan Mackinnon – is etched in a scroll to the blade and there is also a regimental designation of the Coldstrean Guards to both sides of the blade.  It also features a royal VR cypher, royal crown and victory laurels.  The blade forte is retailer etched to H Hart of Pall Mall, London.  This is also repeated to the rear of the scabbard locket.  You will note that Mackinnon died unexpectedly and quite young in June 1836 and that the sword has a VR cypher to the hilt and blade, indicating the reign of Queen Victoria, who was ascended the throne in 1837.  What is likely is that Mackinnon probably ordered the sword in 1836 and his premature death delayed the delivery of the sword and during that time a new monarch had taken over the throne.  The sword was no doubt delivered but unfortunately, Mackinnon had already passed away by this time.

After his death his position in British military history became established and many histories of the conflict featured him quite prominently.  He was even added to a series of cigarette cards on Dandies of the Period – see images below.  He is acknowledged as one of the most famous Scottish soldiers in the history of the British Army.

Unique Opportunity

This is a unique opportunity to acquire a sword associated with one of the most famous British officers of the Napoleonic Wars and with the Bi-Centenary of the battle soon to be celebrated, it can only substantially increase in value.

Condition of the Sword

In good overall condition for its age – some pitting to the blade in places.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 28 inches (33 inches overall).

A painting by Dighton of the Coldstream Guards coming to the aid of the defenders. They fought their way into the chateau. Lieut-Col Daniel Mackinnon of the Grenadier Company has his back to us on the right. He was wounded in the knee but carried on until he became weak through loss of blood. He survived the battle and became commanding officer of the regiment in 1830.

Spanish C.1780 Heavy Cavalry Officer’s Cup Hilt Sword

spanish-1780-cavalry-sword-2

A fine Spanish C.1780 Heavy Cavalry Officer’s Cup Hilt Sword

This is a large Spanish C.1780 Heavy Cavalry Officer’s Cup Hilt Sword with gilt brass and engraved cup hilt.  The grip is bound with silver twistwire and there is a large rounded pommel that is typical of the mid-late 18th Century.  The blade is quite impressive and likely to be c.1700’s as it was common for Spanish swords to be re-hilted with earlier, quality blades.  Blade has numerous armourer’s marks and stampings and is quite unusual profile having a stepped forte and sharply tapering point.

Condition of the Sword

In good overall condition – some wear to blade commensurate with its age.  Some loss of gilding to the cup hilt.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 35.5 inches (43 inches overall).

C.1750 Scottish Dirk Dagger Knife

scottish-1750-highland-dagger-dirk-2

scottish-1828-pattern-broadsword-IMAGE

A fine example of a C.1750 Scottish Dirk Dagger Knife

This is an excellent and rare C.1750 Scottish Dirk Dagger Knife.  It comprises a large triangular blade that is has a typically mid-18th Century profile, coupled with the unusual siting of the staghorn handle.  For similar examples of these mid-18th Century Highland and European knives, please see Swords and Blades of the American Revolution by George C. Neumann, page 236 and also the images below from the book.  The blade is very sharp and would have been a devastating close combat weapon.

Condition of the Dirk Dagger

In fine condition for its age with pleasing age wear to the blade – very similar to that shown in Neumann’s book.

Specifications of the Dirk Dagger

Blade length is 10.5 inches (16 inches overall).
