A very nice, original and scarce Scottish Napoleonic silver-mounted Highland Officer’s dirk. It is likely to have been carried by a Highland Infantry Officer during the early 1800’s. The dirk comprises a carved bog oak, baluster grip with silver pommel cap. This kind of baluster grip is very typical of Scottish Georgian military dirks. The blade is plain – again very common – it is later in the 19th Century (particularly during the Victorian period) when Scottish dirk blades began to be etched with extensive decoration.
Tooled leather decoration to the scabbard
Another indicator of its Napoleonic origins is the heavily tooled leather decoration to the scabbard – see the pics. The scabbard mounts are also solid silver – the silver is not hallmarked but is 100% guaranteed silver – it was not unusual for silver not to be hallmarked then although it was illegal not to do so! Condition is very good for its age – only damage is to the bottom silver mount where over the years, it has creased and split. Blade length is 10 inches (14 inches overall). Please note: These Scottish Napoleonic dirks are very rare so don’t miss out.
